World Plant Appreciation Day

The Syrian Future Movement commemorates World Plant Day, based on its deep belief that Syrian land, with its vegetation and biodiversity, is the cornerstone of national identity and security. It emphasizes that protecting the Syrian environment during this transitional phase is an existential necessity for ensuring a dignified life for future generations.

The Syrian Future Movement bases this vision on alarming environmental reports (for 2025-2026) indicating that Syria has lost more than 35% of its forest cover in the coastal and northern regions due to deliberate fires, illegal logging resulting from fuel shortages, and systematic military bombardment. This has led to severe soil degradation and the loss of vast areas of Syria’s green lung.

The Syrian Future Movement alerts influential powers and the international community to the collapse of the medicinal and aromatic plants sector and the genetic resources of strategic Syrian crops, which once constituted a major economic pillar. Statistics indicate a decline in olive, pistachio, and citrus production ranging from 40% to 60% in some areas due to the lack of agricultural technical support and the destruction of irrigation networks.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the scorched-earth policy pursued during the years of conflict has left catastrophic environmental consequences that will plague Syria for decades. It believes that reforestation and the protection of forests and nature reserves must be integral parts of reconstruction agreements, along with the necessity of enacting strict laws criminalizing attacks on plant and environmental resources in the future Syria.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on international organizations (such as the FAO and the UNEP) to intensify their efforts to support the Syrian Agricultural Gene Bank and provide improved seeds to Syrian farmers. It stresses that restoring Syrian food sovereignty begins with valuing and protecting the Syrian plants and trees that have withstood the machinery of war. The Syrian Future Movement calls on all Syrians inside the country and in the diaspora to launch broad national tree-planting initiatives under the slogan “We plant for our future,” stressing that planting a tree in Syrian soil today is the truest expression of belonging to the land and holding fast to survival and prosperity in a free and green homeland.
