The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the Syrian Engineers Syndicate’s announcement of the launch of the “Syrian Women Engineers Committee” on March 9, 2026, coinciding with International Women’s Day. This positive step aims to enhance the participation of Syrian women in engineering and empower them to actively contribute to sustainable development and reconstruction efforts.
The launch will take place in Damascus and will include female engineers of various specializations and ages, both within and outside Syria, as reported by SANA, quoting the Syndicate’s Secretary, Engineer Rasin Ismat.
The Syrian Future Movement views the formation of this committee as a strategic opportunity to strengthen the role of Syrian women as essential partners in building a modern, civil state. Syrian women engineers have proven their high competence in various engineering disciplines and have contributed significantly to construction and development projects over the past years, despite the considerable challenges.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the current transitional phase requires utilizing all national expertise, including specialized female experience, to achieve comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable reconstruction, free from any exclusion or discrimination.
The Syrian Future Movement appreciates the committee’s stated objectives, which include:
- Providing a supportive professional environment for female engineers. Establishing a global communication platform for exchanging expertise.
- Organizing specialized training programs, events, and conferences.
- Strengthening cooperation with local and international institutions in the fields of development and reconstruction.
- We also welcome the European Union’s declared support for empowering Syrian women and enhancing their full participation in society and decision-making positions, as noted by the Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation, Michael Onmacht.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the necessity for this committee to be a model of transparency, independence, and inclusivity, ensuring fair representation of female engineers from diverse governorates and backgrounds, and avoiding any political or regional influences that might hinder the achievement of its professional and national objectives.
Given the economic and social challenges facing Syrian women, the Syrian Future Movement calls for linking the committee’s work to broader national programs for women’s empowerment in the fields of science, engineering, and technology, as we have previously emphasized, by supporting the political and professional rights of Syrian women (as outlined in our paper “The Political Rights of Syrian Women,” dated August 20, 2024, and our position on “Women in Syria,” dated June 4, 2024).
In this context, the Syrian Future Movement calls for:
- Expanding the scope of the committee to include advanced training programs and genuine job opportunities in national reconstruction projects, while ensuring equal opportunities and protection from discrimination.
- Strengthening cooperation between the committee and international organizations and the United Nations (including UN Women) to exchange expertise and attract technical and financial support, while preserving national sovereignty.
- Involving civil society and independent experts in monitoring the committee’s performance to ensure it is an effective instrument for social justice and inclusive development within the framework of Security Council Resolution 2254.
- Confronting regional and external challenges by strengthening national unity and rejecting any attempts to exploit women’s issues for foreign political agendas.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the Syria of the future we strive for is a Syria where women—including Syrian female engineers—are full partners in development and reconstruction, contributing their competence and creativity to building a modern, just, and sustainable nation that restores dignity and hope to every citizen.
