International Day for Zero Discrimination

The Syrian Future Movement commemorates the International Day for Zero Discrimination, launched by UNAIDS in 2014, which marks the anniversary of its initial declaration in Beijing.

This day serves as an international reminder that human dignity and equality of rights and opportunities are not merely idealistic principles, but essential foundations for the stability of societies and the building of modern, resilient, and progressive states.

The Syrian Future Movement views the 2026 slogan, “People First,” as a strategic call to reorder national priorities, placing human beings—in all their cultural, social, and health diversity—at the heart of every public policy and the basis of every development, health, education, and security program.

The Syrian Future Movement recognizes that Syria has just emerged from decades of systematic discrimination and political and social exclusion, whether based on sectarian, ethnic, regional, class, gender, health status, or displacement and refugee status.

Ending these patterns is an existential prerequisite for the sustainability of the nation-state and preventing the return of cycles of violence and division.

The Syrian Future Movement is committed to translating this day into a long-term national action plan that includes the following steps:

  • A comprehensive and ongoing review of national legislation to eliminate any provisions that contain direct or indirect discrimination, while adhering to international human rights standards and the covenants to which Syria is a party.
  • Building a fair and inclusive national health system that guarantees equal access to preventive and curative healthcare services, including programs to combat infectious and chronic diseases, free from any social stigma or institutional exclusion.
  • Integrating the principles of equality and non-discrimination into national educational curricula, training programs for public and private sector employees, and official and community media campaigns.
  • Establishing an independent national mechanism to monitor and address discrimination complaints, with investigative and recommendation powers, and comprising diverse representation from civil society, NGOs, and independent experts.
  • Strengthening partnerships with international organizations (UNAIDS, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the United Nations Development Programme) to benefit from technical and financial support in building sustainable national capacities in the field of combating discrimination.

The Syrian Future Movement looks to the future with confidence built on hard work. It believes that by 2035, Syria must be able to measure its true progress by the standards of genuine equality and social justice, not solely by economic growth rates.

We also believe that victory over tyranny is incomplete without the triumph of the values of equal dignity. This requires strong and transparent institutions, and a society that sees diversity as a source of strength, not a threat.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on all Syrians—both inside and outside the country—to make the principle of “People First” a daily practice, not just an annual celebration.

Together, let us build a homeland that protects the dignity of every citizen and opens the doors of the future to coming generations, free from the shadows of discrimination and exclusion.
