The international conference held in Damascus to discuss the chemical weapons issue

At a pivotal moment in Syria’s history, and amidst the complexities of the political and humanitarian landscape, the Syrian Future Movement followed with great interest the international conference held in Damascus on September 30, 2025. The conference addressed the issue of chemical weapons, with the participation of survivors and victims of attacks that have taken place in the country over the past years.

While appreciating any international effort that sheds light on the crimes committed against the Syrian people, the Syrian Future Movement views this conference as a strategic opportunity to redirect the compass toward justice and accountability, rather than toward exoneration or narrow political exploitation.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that discussing the chemical weapons issue must be part of a comprehensive transitional justice process that encompasses all violations that have affected Syrians and establishes a basis for genuine national reconciliation based on uncovering the truth and holding perpetrators accountable.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for the chemical weapons issue not to be a bargaining chip in the political bazaar, but rather to remain at the heart of national and international human rights demands, as part of any Syrian authority’s commitments to the future.

The Syrian Future Movement believes this conference can be a starting point toward:

  • Rebuilding trust between Syrians and international institutions, through genuinely involving victims in formulating justice.
  • Opening new paths for national dialogue, based on acknowledging crimes, not denying them.
  • Activating the role of Syrian civil society in monitoring and documenting violations, free from official hegemony.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on all national forces, inside and outside Syria, to join forces to build a future where there is no room for impunity and no room for recurring tragedies. A nation is not built on the ruins of truth, but rather on the foundations of justice, freedom, and dignity.

While the Syrian Future Movement affirms that Syria deserves a better future, we renew our commitment to a political path that restores Syrians’ right to build their state after the fall of Assad and moves the country out of any future cycle of bloodshed and denial, moving it into a space of reconciliation, development, prosperity, and peace.
