In a moment of profound national symbolism, on September 19, 2025, the Syrian flag was raised over the Syrian embassy in Washington, D.C., marking the return of official diplomatic representation after a hiatus of more than a quarter century.
We in the Syrian Future Movement view this step as a positive indicator of Syria’s renewed engagement with the international community, reflecting the ongoing transition toward a national transitional phase that seeks to build a state of institutions, the rule of law, and legitimate representation of the Syrian people.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that raising the Syrian flag abroad at this historic moment is not merely a mere protocol act, but rather embodies the beginning of Syria’s restoration of its international standing after years of isolation, division, and marginalization. This act derives its legitimacy not from the authorities, but rather from the popular will that aspires to a new, free, pluralistic, and just homeland that represents all its citizens without exclusion or monopolization.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the following:
- This step comes in the context of a national transitional phase that has begun to take shape after decades of tyranny. It represents a historic opportunity that must be seized to build a modern, civil, and pluralistic state that restores dignity to citizens and enshrines the principle of equal citizenship.
- The return of Syrian diplomatic representation abroad must be managed with a responsible national spirit, reflecting the aspirations of Syrians and strengthening Syria’s presence as an active state in the international community, not as an isolated or subordinate party.
- Syrian embassies abroad must be transformed into platforms for serving communities, defending their rights, and facilitating their participation in shaping the country’s future. They must not be used as narrow propaganda or political tools.
- Raising the Syrian flag in Washington must be accompanied by raising the banner of justice within Syria, through tangible steps that include guaranteeing public freedoms and activating the political process to ensure the success of the transitional phase.
- Syria’s openness to the world must be healthy, balanced, and based on respect for national sovereignty and openness to international partnerships, without dependency or subordination, and in a manner that serves the interests of the Syrian people in development, reconstruction, and stability.
The Syrian Future Movement blesses this symbolic step and considers it the beginning of a long journey toward restoring Syria’s standing, provided it is built on new foundations that end the logic of the security state and establish a state of institutions, accountability, and transparency. The Syria we aspire to is not one whose flags are raised only abroad, but one in which the banners of dignity and freedom are raised domestically.
The Syria we believe in is one built by the will of its people, governed by its institutions, and respected worldwide because it respects its citizens first and foremost.
