On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the Syrian Future Movement participated in a national event held in the Abu Suleiman al-Darani Mosque neighborhood, titled “Commemorating the Great Daraya Massacre and the Displacement of its People.”
A symbolic tent was erected in the Martyrs’ Cemetery to serve as a platform for dialogue and commemoration of the martyrs. The event was attended by a large number of victims’ families, along with a select group of political and cultural figures and representatives of Syrian national entities.
A group of members from the Syrian Future Movement attended, including Dr. Zaher Badrani, President of the Syrian Future Movement. He was accompanied by Mr. Basil Muhammad Qabbani, a member of the Political Bureau for the Damascus Countryside, and Mr. Saeed Karimo, a member of the Organizational Bureau, reaffirming the movement’s commitment to justice and its contribution to national memory.
This event marks the twelfth anniversary of the massacre committed by the Syrian regime in Darayya in August 2012, which lasted from August 20 to 25. The massacre resulted in the deaths of approximately 700 civilians, including women and children, and the injury and arrest of more than 1,500 others. This was one of the most heinous crimes witnessed in Syria during the years of the revolution.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes, through this event, that the city of Darayya is still suffering from the effects of this tragedy, including widespread destruction and the near-total displacement of its residents, as well as the harsh living conditions faced by those who subsequently returned. Despite the passing of the years, Darayya continues to resist oblivion and faces a disturbing international silence regarding holding the perpetrators of the massacre accountable.
We, in the Syrian Future Movement, also emphasize that the responsibility for achieving true transitional justice is not limited to Daraya alone, but rather extends from there as a model for all afflicted Syrian regions. We affirm our commitment, alongside the Syrian national forces, to continuing the struggle to uncover the truth, provide justice for the victims, and build a future based on justice and accountability.
The Syrian Future Movement also hopes that the new era in Syria will be accompanied by the announcement of the arrest of some of the perpetrators of these heinous crimes in Daraya, including officers, non-commissioned officers, and those involved, and that some survivors, both male and female, will be honored and compensated for some of their losses.
