Request for a visit by the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections to the Sweida Governorate

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its strong support for the High Elections Committee’s announcement of its intention to visit Sweida to consult with community actors, at a time when the governorate is experiencing open wounds and an unprecedented humanitarian tragedy.

While the Syrian Future Movement does not deny the importance of political dialogue, it emphasizes that:

  • Any electoral process in Sweida must be accompanied by a radical solution to the current crisis and holding those responsible for massacres and violations accountable.
  • Talk of elections and political representation loses meaning in light of the forced displacement and demographic change that threatens the unity and historical diversity of Sweida society.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for the formation of an independent investigative committee to uncover the circumstances of what happened in Sweida and to ensure that perpetrators do not escape punishment. This committee must be binding and be under UN auspices.

  • An immediate halt to any displacement or population relocation operations and respect for the historical rights of the governorate’s Bedouin and Christian communities.
  • Any electoral activity in Sweida must be accompanied by restoring a minimum level of stability and justice and ensuring a safe environment for free political participation.
  • Launching a comprehensive national dialogue that guarantees the representation of all Syrian components.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its full solidarity with the people of Sweida and those kidnapped by both sides. We affirm that dignity and justice are not achieved solely through ballot boxes, but rather are built on the recognition of rights, the cessation of violations, the achievement of true national reconciliation, the arrest of criminals, and the rallying around the nation-state.
