The World Day Against Police Brutality

The Syrian Future Movement observes the World Day Against Police Brutality—a day that reminds the world of the importance of protecting human rights, reinforcing the rule of law, and ensuring accountability for any abuses that violate the dignity and freedoms of citizens.

The Syrian Future Movement regards this occasion as an international opportunity to reaffirm that true security is achieved only through justice and that the role of security institutions should be founded on protecting people, not intimidating them.

It believes that the challenges Syria has faced in recent years—including the conditions of war and the complexities of the transitional phase—have created a reality that demands radical reform to rehabilitate the security institutions and ensure that their performance aligns with international human rights standards.

The Syrian Future Movement is convinced that our struggle, as a civil movement for justice that touches every aspect of life, is inseparable from our efforts to build a professional, accountable security apparatus that respects citizens and serves society.

It considers police brutality, wherever it occurs, not merely as an individual violation but as an infringement on the legitimacy of the state itself. Such abuse threatens civil peace and deepens the gap between the people and their institutions.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for the activation of local and human rights oversight mechanisms over the performance of security agencies and for ensuring transparency in the investigation of any instances of abuse.

It also advocates for reforming the legislation governing the police force to ensure its compliance with international charters, criminalize torture, and prevent impunity.

Furthermore, the Syrian Future Movement urges the promotion of a culture of human rights through awareness and training programs for security personnel that highlight their role as protectors of society, rather than as instruments of repression.

The Syrian Future Movement sees addressing police brutality as requiring a serious global partnership to monitor police violations and to support civil society organizations that document these abuses and defend the victims.

It calls on the international community to provide technical and material support for restructuring the Syrian security apparatus, paving the way for a gradual transition toward a security model based on protection rather than domination.

Finally, the Syrian Future Movement regards the anniversary of the World Day Against Police Brutality not as a day to accuse any particular security force, but as an occasion to renew the social contract between the state and its citizens, ensuring that security is a right for all—not a tool against anyone.
