World Statistics Day

The United Nations General Assembly established this day through Resolution 69/282. The occasion is marked under the enduring UN theme, “Better Data, Better Lives,” with a current international focus on “leading change through high-quality data and statistics for all.”

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that World Statistics Day—celebrated internationally on October 20—represents a global recognition of the role that digital knowledge and transparent data play in shaping equitable development policies and tracking indicators of human stability.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the UN’s lasting theme, “Better Data, Better Lives,” encapsulates the direct correlation between the availability of accurate, impartial statistical indicators and a society’s capacity to improve the quality of education, healthcare, and living standards, as well as to combat marginalization.
It should be noted that the withholding or falsification of data serves as a tool for political and economic obfuscation—a tactic employed by non-democratic regimes to suppress collective awareness and hinder mechanisms for future planning.

The Syrian Future Movement draws upon international reports from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) for 2026, which indicate that Syria is currently experiencing a state of “profound statistical darkness,” resulting from the cessation of comprehensive field surveys and a complete lack of institutional accountability. The Syrian Future Movement expresses its deep concern regarding the reliance on arbitrary and uncontrolled estimates for assessing poverty, unemployment, inflation, and displacement. This practice hinders the delivery of international aid and development projects to those who truly need them within Syria, and undermines early recovery efforts.

The Syrian Future Movement declares its principled commitment to standing with the Syrian people, guided by an independent, civic vision that transcends narrow political polarizations. It views transparent statistical knowledge as a fundamental pillar of democratic transition and genuine citizenship.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that combating financial and administrative corruption, reconstructing infrastructure, and creating job opportunities for the youth cannot be achieved without transitioning to “digital governance” and making data publicly accessible as a tool for popular and civic oversight.

The Syrian Future Movement maintains that shaping the desired new Syria requires the construction of a “social and economic contract based on facts rather than slogans”—one where precise figures and data serve as the ultimate benchmark for evaluating the performance of institutions and officials.

The Syrian Future Movement calls upon the incumbent authority in Damascus to facilitate the work of research and statistical centers, and to restructure the Central Bureau of Statistics into a fully independent body—one that is impartial, professional, and subject to both civic and judicial oversight. The Syrian Future Movement calls upon international organizations and independent think tanks to collaborate in establishing a “unified, open national platform for Syrian data.” This platform would focus on collecting and verifying statistics concerning displaced persons, refugees, and living conditions, thereby ensuring equitable planning for sustainable development projects.

The Syrian Future Movement urges civil society organizations and active stakeholders to launch programs aimed at building the statistical capacity of Syrian youth. It also encourages the promotion of data journalism and evidence-based scientific research as essential tools for fostering a culture of civic engagement and modern, progressive values.

Furthermore, the Syrian Future Movement appeals to Syrian experts and professionals living abroad—particularly those in the fields of economics and data—to direct their research efforts toward diagnosing the local situation through quantitative data. This would lay the groundwork for developing scientific, actionable strategies to be implemented once a comprehensive political solution is reached in the country.
