The Syrian Future Movement is pleased to continue documenting Syrian success stories that bring honor to the nation. These stories are published periodically on its website under the heading “Syrian Successes,” reflecting the belief that Syrian excellence on the international stage serves as a message of hope and confidence in the country’s future.
From the heart of challenges to global podiums:
Syrian champion Mahmoud Abdul Khaliq Barri, a native of Idlib Governorate, has achieved an extraordinary feat by winning first place and a gold medal in the open-weight category at the Kickboxing World Cup, recently held in Uzbekistan.
This victory was not merely the result of a single match; rather, it marked a pivotal milestone in an athletic career defined by determination and resilience.
This achievement underscores the strong presence of Syrian sports in the international arena. The Syrian national team secured a total of six medals at the same tournament—one gold, one silver, and four bronze—demonstrating that Syrian talent is capable of competing at the highest levels, even in the face of limited resources.
A champion’s journey:
Barri’s athletic journey did not begin with kickboxing. He started in taekwondo in 2001, winning the national championship for six consecutive years—a feat that earned him a spot on the national team.
In 2011, he transitioned to kickboxing. Although circumstances prevented him from participating in the World Championship in Macedonia at that time, he returned to Idlib, remaining steadfast in his pursuit of his athletic dreams despite the many challenges he faced. His role extended beyond personal competition; he dedicated himself to developing other champions. He founded the Syrian International Academy for Martial Arts and Fitness in the city of Maarrat Misrin, where he helped train approximately 15 national-level champions—five of whom were selected to join the national team.
Following the liberation of the region, he continued his work with his team, securing first place nationwide before ultimately reaching the global podium in Uzbekistan.
Official Recognition:
Champion Barri received official recognition from the Governor of Idlib, Mr. Muhammad Abd al-Rahman, in honor of his international achievement. The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Hassan al-Fajr, and the Director of the Sports and Youth Directorate, Mr. Hussam al-Turk.
The Governor praised this significant accomplishment, describing it as a source of pride for both the Idlib province and Syria as a whole. He noted that it embodies the determination of Syrian youth and their capacity for excellence—elevating the nation’s profile on the international stage—and wished the champion continued success in securing further global titles.
The Perspective of the Syrian Future Movement:
The Syrian Future Movement views this achievement as living proof that Syrians, wherever they may be, carry within them an inherent drive—a spirit of strength and persistence—along with a unique ability to transform challenges into platforms for excellence and national pride.
In the story of Mahmoud Barri—who overcame limited material and logistical resources to claim a world gold medal—we see definitive evidence that Syria’s true wealth lies not beneath its soil, but in the strength of its people and the potential of its youth. In this context, the Syrian Future Movement asserts that restoring Syria’s leading role in the region and the world begins with serious investment in the sports and youth sector—by providing the necessary infrastructure and support programs to nurture champions, and by fostering a culture of achievement and excellence among the new generation.
When individual successes are brought together and channeled effectively, they transform into a collective driving force capable of rebuilding a new Syria—one founded on strength, knowledge, and creativity.
While the Syrian Future Movement commends this honorable achievement, it hopes that such stories will serve as an inspiration to Syrian youth everywhere. It also extends an open invitation to the international community and the global sports sector to invest in Syria’s promising talent—talent that has proven, time and again, its capacity to make a difference whenever given the opportunity and support.
A new Syria is built by Syrian hands, minds, and efforts; these successes represent the initial seeds for a brighter and more prosperous tomorrow.
