The Syrian Future Movement is following with great interest the historic announcement made by Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), on Tuesday, August 26, 2026, at the People’s Palace in Damascus, in the presence of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The announcement included the dissolution of the SDF and the Autonomous Administration, along with all their affiliated military and civilian formations, and their full integration into Syrian state institutions.
The Syrian Future Movement commends this decision, which closes a chapter of more than a decade of independent military and administrative presence in northeastern Syria. It opens new horizons for unifying state institutions, ending the duplication of institutions, and restoring state sovereignty over all its territory.
The Movement views this announcement as the culmination of a negotiation process that began with the March 10, 2025 agreement and witnessed intensive negotiations in the January 2026 agreement, which laid the groundwork for the integration process. However, the Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that this declaration, despite its historical significance, marks the beginning of a new phase requiring redoubled efforts to translate words into action, ensure a smooth and equitable integration encompassing all personnel and institutions, and lay the foundations for the unified state that Syrians have long dreamed of.
The Syrian Future Movement views this declaration as the end of the longest-running parallel administrative and military presence in Syria since 2015, the restoration of state control over border crossings, public facilities, and oil and gas fields, and the reactivation of courts and official departments in accordance with Syrian law.
We commend Abdi’s announcement regarding the handover of the Rmeilan and Suwaidiya oil fields to the Syrian state.
We note that the integration includes the incorporation of military and security personnel into the Ministries of Defense and Interior, following the completion of vetting and settlement procedures and the granting of ranks and entitlements in accordance with applicable laws.
This fulfills the long-held dream of a unified national army, a vision the Movement has consistently advocated in its previous statements.
We also welcome the unification of administrative and legal frameworks, the regularization of civil servants, and the elimination of duplication of institutions in northeastern Syria. This will contribute to consolidating the principle of a single state and a single institution, and will enhance the efficiency of government performance.
The Syrian Future Movement reminds us that this historic phase of unifying state institutions necessitates a comprehensive review of national identity and official symbols.
Therefore, we call for:
First: Replacing the name “Syrian Arab Republic” with simply “Syria”—for “Syria” is the historical and geographical name of this country, and it unites all Syrians regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliations.
Removing the word “Arab” from the official name does not diminish Syria’s Arab identity; rather, it affirms that Syria is the homeland of all its citizens, and that citizenship is the foundation.
We believe that this change will strengthen national unity and eliminate any suggestions of discrimination or exclusion.
Second: Replacing the phrase “in the name of the Arab people” in judicial and official discourse with “in the name of the Syrian people,” as we believe that the judiciary and official authorities represent the Syrian people in all their diversity, and that using the term “the Syrian people” reflects national unity and strengthens the sense of shared belonging.
This change eliminates any ambiguity or exclusion and establishes a comprehensive national discourse.
Third: Adopting these changes in the constitution and new legislation. We call for the inclusion of these amendments in the new constitution and the laws regulating national symbols, to serve as a fixed reference point reflecting the spirit of this new era.
In this context, the Syrian Future Movement reiterates its consistent positions, published on its official website, which emphasize the priority of unifying state institutions and establishing the principle of equal citizenship:
Statement on “Berkhadan’s Statements Regarding Integration with the Syrian State” (dated August 17, 2026): Welcoming the statements of the SDF commander in Ain al-Arab regarding integration, and affirming that “recognizing the centrality of the Syrian state is the only solution.”
The statement regarding the “Agreement to Integrate the SDF into the Syrian State” (dated January 19, 2026) called for transforming the agreement into a constitutional foundation through a comprehensive national dialogue that includes all components of Syrian society, drawing on Colombia’s experience in redistributing land and resources to reduce economic disparities that fuel conflict.
Based on its national responsibility, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
Expediting the implementation of the integration provisions on the ground, with clear timelines and precise monitoring mechanisms to ensure a smooth and rapid transition of personnel and institutions into state structures.
Guaranteeing the rights of all integrated personnel by regularizing their employment and legal status and granting them ranks and entitlements in accordance with Syrian law, thereby strengthening their loyalty to the nation and its institutions.
Addressing the issues of education and the Kurdish language in a way that guarantees the rights of all components of Syrian society within a unified state and promotes cultural diversity as a national asset.
Completing the reactivation of courts and official departments in northeastern Syria and unifying judicial authorities in accordance with Syrian law.
Strengthening national reconciliation by declaring a general amnesty that includes all those who participated in the conflict, thus contributing to turning the page on the past and building a shared future.
The entry of all state institutions into all areas and the extension of their sovereignty, and the preservation of the right of every Syrian citizen to move freely throughout any part of Syria without discrimination based on belief or ethnicity.
The Syrian Future Movement appreciates this historic declaration, which closes a chapter of fragmentation and opens new horizons for the unity of Syria and its institutions.
It reiterates that national unity is not merely a slogan, but a constructive project that requires continuous efforts from all parties and a genuine political will to establish the principles of justice and equal citizenship.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that this historical stage requires a bold review of national symbols, including the official name of the state, to ensure they reflect the unity of all Syrians and their shared identity.
For its part, the Syrian Future Movement will remain a supporter of everything that strengthens Syria’s unity and sovereignty, a critic of everything that hinders its realization, and a monitor of everything achieved on the ground, striving for a new Syria where justice prevails.
