The first batch of Syrians arrives in Lebanese prisons

The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the arrival of the first group of 132 Syrian detainees from Lebanese prisons (including Roumieh Central Prison) at the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing on March 18, 2026, and commends the swift and organized implementation of this humanitarian and legal step.

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its appreciation for the joint efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the Syrian Ministries of Justice and Interior, in coordination with the Lebanese side, and with the participation of the Chargé d’Affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Lebanon, Iyad Hazza, Judge Nimr Ahmad al-Nimr, and Minister of Justice Mazhar al-Awais, which led to the commencement of the implementation of the bilateral agreement signed in Beirut on February 6, 2026. This agreement is limited to those convicted with final sentences, allowing them to complete their sentences in accordance with Syrian law.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that this actual implementation represents a significant practical step in the path of judicial and humanitarian cooperation between the two brotherly countries. It is fully consistent with its firm position, as expressed in its statement issued on February 7, 2016, entitled “Agreement on the Transfer of Convicted Persons between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Lebanese Republic,” in which we welcomed the signing and considered it the opening of a new chapter in bilateral relations.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its full solidarity with Syrian citizens in Lebanese prisons and appreciates the anticipated subsequent steps to complete the file. We also call for the activation of the Lebanese Cabinet’s decision issued on January 30, 2016, regarding the transfer of approximately 260 Syrian convicts. We consider this a just humanitarian issue that requires immediate and organized solutions.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for the continued transparent and organized implementation of all the agreement’s provisions, guaranteeing the rights of the convicts and taking into account humanitarian and social considerations. This should be done within the framework of building equitable neighborly relations based on mutual respect and legal cooperation, free from any interference or prior considerations.

The Syrian Future Movement, based on its founding vision since 2012, published on its official website sfuturem.org, affirms its commitment to building a strong, civil state that respects its sovereignty and is open to humanitarian and legal solutions with neighboring countries. It considers the success of this agreement a model for joint action that strengthens regional stability and contributes to restoring trust between the Syrian and Lebanese peoples.

The Syrian Future Movement views this step as a historic opportunity to close the chapters of the past with dignity and through the law. We affirm that the new Syria, in its transitional phase, will continue to build constructive foreign relations that reflect its commitment to citizenship, justice, and peace.
