The Syrian Future Movement is following with great interest the statement issued by the European Union on February 28, 2026, in which it expressed its desire to continue a constructive dialogue with Syria that serves stability, following a meeting between an EU delegation and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
The Syrian Future Movement welcomes this European position and considers it a positive and expected step in Syria’s gradual return to the international community after years of isolation and sanctions.
We also believe that the high-level political dialogue, the upgrading of diplomatic representation, and the review of sanctions policy to make it more flexible are all indicators of a shift in the European perspective toward the new Syrian reality.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms the following principles:
- The Syrian Arab Republic is a fully sovereign state, and any international dialogue must respect this sovereignty and be based on the supreme Syrian national interest, not on preconditions that contradict the popular will or national principles.
- Internal stability and economic and social recovery are national priorities that cannot be postponed. Any international cooperation—whether European or otherwise—must serve these priorities, foremost among them the safe and dignified return of refugees, the reconstruction of infrastructure, and the improvement of living conditions for Syrians.
- Syria cannot accept any form of external tutelage or dictates under the guise of “stability” or “recovery.” We believe that dialogue must be reciprocal and equitable, reflecting mutual respect for national sovereignty.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on the transitional government to:
- Continue building balanced relations with all international parties, while preserving the independence of national decision-making.
- Establish a clear and transparent framework for any dialogue with the European Union, focusing on shared interests (the return of refugees, economic recovery, and support for reconstruction) without compromising national principles.
- Strengthen partnerships with Arab and regional countries as a top priority, to ensure that any international cooperation complements, rather than replaces, the unified Arab position.
- The involvement of Syrian civil society and experts in these dialogues is crucial to ensure that their outcomes serve the Syrian people and not foreign agendas.
The Syrian Future Movement reaffirms its commitment to working towards a free and independent Syria, capable of building balanced international relations that serve its national interests and strengthen its internal stability, free from any settling of scores or foreign interference.
