The Syrian Future Movement celebrates Earth Hour 2026, which will take place today, Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM local time, as part of the global campaign organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) for the past twenty years.
The Syrian Future Movement commends this global initiative, which calls on millions of people, cities, and institutions around the world to switch off unnecessary lights for one hour, with the aim of raising awareness about climate change, biodiversity loss, and the importance of transitioning to sustainable energy. The campaign, themed “The Biggest Hour for Earth,” celebrates its twentieth anniversary and calls for moving beyond symbolism to genuine collective action.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that Syria, which has suffered decades of environmental degradation resulting from war and past policies, in addition to the effects of the February 6, 2023 earthquake, faces a double challenge: climate change, which exacerbates drought and water scarcity, and the destruction of infrastructure, which increases the consumption of unsustainable energy. We believe that Syria’s participation in Earth Hour represents a symbolic and educational opportunity to raise national awareness of these issues.
The Syrian Future Movement sees this occasion as a call to move from symbolic action to long-term, practical strategies, especially during the recovery and reconstruction phase the country is undergoing, where environmental sustainability must be a central focus of any development plans.
The Syrian Future Movement recommends broad participation from government institutions, civil society, and citizens in switching off the lights today, along with organizing local awareness events that connect climate issues to the Syrian reality.
The Syrian Future Movement recommends incorporating environmental sustainability and renewable energy standards into reconstruction programs in all governorates, with a focus on building climate-resilient cities and buildings.
The Syrian Future Movement recommends launching a “National Initiative for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Protection,” which includes a comprehensive national plan for energy conservation, increased reliance on solar energy, and protection of natural resources, with the active participation of civil society and the private sector.
The Syrian Future Movement recommends strengthening international partnerships in the field of environment and climate under conditions that preserve national sovereignty and ensure that support is directed towards sustainable projects that serve the Syrian citizen.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on all Syrians, both inside and outside the country, to actively participate in Earth Hour, not only by switching off lights, but also by raising awareness of the need to build the Syria of the future on sound environmental foundations and sustainable development. Protecting our planet is protecting our homeland and the future of our generations.
