The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the Syrian Arab Republic’s assumption of the presidency of the Arab Group at the United Nations in New York for the current session, within the framework of the periodic coordination mechanism among Arab member states of the international organization.
We view this step as a significant diplomatic achievement reflecting Syria’s active return to the heart of joint Arab action after years of isolation and marginalization.
The Syrian Future Movement sees this assumption as clear evidence of the success of the transitional phase in restoring regional and international confidence. The new Syria – following the fall of the despotic regime in December 2014 – has become a reliable partner in unifying the Arab discourse in the face of the political, humanitarian, and developmental challenges confronting the Arab nation within the halls of the United Nations.
The Syrian Future Movement appreciates the efforts exerted by Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ibrahim Alabi, who held a meeting with the Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Majid Abdel Fattah Abdel Aziz, to discuss the Group’s work priorities for the coming month and ways to enhance joint coordination, thus reaffirming Syria’s commitment to constructive collective action.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that Syria’s assumption of this presidency comes at a critical juncture, as the region faces major challenges such as the continued Israeli violations in the occupied Palestinian and Syrian territories, the humanitarian crises in Gaza, Sudan, and Yemen, and the need to strengthen joint Arab efforts to support sustainable development and a just peace.
The Syrian Future Movement sees this presidency as a golden opportunity for Syria to enhance its role as a bridge of civilization among Arab states and to present a national, democratic, and civil vision that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people for a unified and pluralistic state that respects human rights and cultural and religious diversity, far removed from the policies of polarization and foreign intervention that characterized the past.
The Syrian Future Movement, which emerged from the heart of the Syrian revolution in November 2012 as a national, civil, and democratic political entity, is committed to supporting every effort that strengthens Syria’s position within its Arab, Islamic, and international environment. It calls upon the transitional government to leverage this presidency to serve the supreme national interests by:
Focusing on reconstruction and the safe return of Syrian refugees as a shared Arab priority within the United Nations.
Unifying the Arab position regarding Israeli violations in the occupied Syrian Golan and supporting relevant international resolutions.
Encouraging enhanced coordination with the Arab League to support stability in Syria, including combating terrorism and extremism in all its forms, while preserving Syrian sovereignty.
Emphasizing the importance of this presidency serving as a model for the new Syrian diplomacy: transparent, responsible, committed to international law, and inspired by the values of the Syrian revolution: freedom and dignity.
The Syrian Future Movement calls upon all national forces and Syrian civil society to support this diplomatic step, considering it part of the process of restoring Syria to its rightful place as an active and influential state in the Arab and Islamic world.
