The Syrian Future Movement views with great positivity and full support the launch of the “Daraya is Our Responsibility” initiative, announced on February 14, 2026, to promote a culture of cleanliness and collective responsibility. We see this five-day initiative, which includes removing accumulated garbage, sweeping, washing, and dusting the city’s streets and neighborhoods, as a practical and inspiring step towards strengthening community spirit and rehabilitating Syrian cities after years of destruction.
We also see it as an embodiment of the values of collective responsibility and cooperation among residents, the city council, civil defense, civil administration, industrialists, and activists, and an opportunity to transform Daraya into a model to be emulated throughout Syria.
From this perspective, and through our national vision that prioritizes the interests of the Syrian people and the promotion of sustainability above all else, we in the Syrian Future Movement affirm the following:
- We welcome the initiative as a first step towards community recovery.
The Syrian Future Movement believes this campaign is a powerful awareness message emphasizing that “cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility” and strengthening the sense of belonging to the city.
The timing, just before Ramadan, gives the initiative a social and spiritual dimension, contributing to raising the morale of residents and improving their daily lives.
We also appreciate the frank acknowledgment of challenges such as the shortage of equipment and fuel, and the fact that the first day was considered a trial run, with plans to repeat it before Eid al-Fitr. This reflects realism and transparency. - Supporting participation and fostering a spirit of organization is crucial. From the perspective of the Future Movement, this broad participation embodies a model of partnership between official and community entities, recalling Daraya’s history of organized community work.
The national vision here calls upon us all to extend this model to other cities, focusing on dividing the city into sectors and encouraging residents to participate in side streets and alleyways.
The Syrian Future Movement recommends establishing a regular daily waste collection system with fixed collection points in each neighborhood to prevent future accumulation of waste.
We also recommend launching ongoing awareness campaigns in schools, mosques, and neighborhoods, focusing on waste segregation and avoiding indiscriminate dumping, while considering imposing small, symbolic fines on violators after an initial awareness campaign.
The Syrian Future Movement calls for coordination with central authorities and international organizations, such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which is already working on rubble removal in Daraya, to provide additional machinery, fuel, or equipment.
We also call for encouraging local industrialists and merchants to “sponsor” specific neighborhoods by providing tools or logistical support as part of their social responsibility.
The Syrian Future Movement proposes integrating the campaign with infrastructure repair projects, such as sanitation, roads, and lighting, to prevent the recurrence of problems due to structural defects.
We suggest expanding the campaign to include the removal of remaining rubble in residential areas and launching small-scale tree-planting campaigns to improve the environment and promote sustainability.
Furthermore, we propose establishing a small community committee, comprised of residents, activists, and experts, to evaluate the campaign weekly and publish transparent reports on achievements and obstacles to foster a sense of participation and accountability.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on all national forces, community organizations, and residents of Daraya and other Syrian cities to embrace this spirit of cooperation. We believe that the “Daraya is Our Responsibility” initiative affirms that Syria’s future is built by the hands of its people, and that sustainability begins with collective responsibility.
Therefore, we value this step as evidence of the Syrian people’s ability to start anew, and we call for its transformation into a national campaign encompassing all governorates.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that together we can make “Daraya is Our Responsibility” a permanent daily reality, and make cleanliness a national culture that reflects our civilization.
We, in turn, call upon all the people of Daraya to actively participate, and upon the relevant authorities to support this spirit with the necessary resources.
The city deserves to be cleaner and more beautiful, and we – its people – are primarily responsible for achieving this.
Let us work together to make it a model to be emulated throughout Syria.
