The governor of Suwaida calls for national reconciliation

In light of the rapidly positive developments in Syria, and with the restoration of full state sovereignty over all its territory, the Syrian Future Movement issues this statement to affirm its national position supporting the call made by Dr. Mustafa al-Bakour, Governor of Suwaida Governorate, on January 19, 2026, addressed to the wise men and dignitaries of the governorate, urging them to extend a hand of reconciliation and harmony.

The Syrian Future Movement views this call as a decisive strategic step, as al-Bakour described the restoration of full state sovereignty – including in the recently liberated areas – as a “blessed historical event” and a fundamental step towards restoring security and stability. He called upon the people of Suwaida to rely on their awareness and historical wisdom to be at the forefront of those striving for reconciliation, emphasizing that the governorate “has been and will remain a bastion of Arabism,” that its people are a symbol of dignity and awareness, and that legitimate rights are indisputable, provided they are achieved through constructive dialogue and official channels within the framework of the constitution and the law.

The Syrian Future Movement links this call organically to the agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), signed on January 18, 2016. This agreement includes 14 key points: an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire; the integration of individual SDF members into the Syrian army and security services after security vetting; the administrative and military handover of the Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor governorates to the government; the state’s control of border crossings and oil and gas fields; the integration of civilian institutions within the state structure; the expulsion of non-Syrian members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK); the handover of ISIS prisons and camps; and the appointment of SDF leaders to senior positions.

This agreement, negotiated with US mediation, effectively marks the end of the era of internal armed conflict and opens the door to comprehensive national integration.

The Syrian Future Movement strongly calls for an immediate end to the military conflict that has plagued the Syrian people for years, and its replacement with organized political action through state institutions. This is essential for building a strong national state based on a social contract that prioritizes the common good, guarantees the rights of all components of society without exclusion or discrimination, and is founded on the principles of citizenship, social justice, and genuine partnership in decision-making.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the current transitional phase requires a comprehensive national vision that addresses economic and social challenges, such as the harsh climate and the dire living conditions in areas like Suwaida. It calls for the restoration of infrastructure and the reactivation of essential services (electricity, water, and healthcare), with a focus on building trust through official apologies for past mistakes and opening a new chapter of national healing.

To promote integration and development, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:

  • The formation of local national dialogue committees in each governorate, including Suwaida, comprising representatives of community leaders, activists, youth, and specialists. These committees would discuss legitimate demands and formulate tailored development plans, linking them to sustainable agricultural support programs that utilize ecological farming techniques to address climate change, and the establishment of national trade networks to market local products.
  • Launching joint educational and cultural initiatives, such as establishing joint vocational and technological training centers for various Syrian communities, focusing on digital programs and artificial intelligence to empower youth, and connecting remote areas to the capital through online learning platforms, to build a generation that believes in Syrian unity as the foundation for progress.
  • Rapid constitutional reforms that include expanding administrative and service decentralization to enable governorates to manage their local affairs efficiently, while maintaining strong central control over national and security policies, to achieve a balance that reflects Syria’s diversity and prevents any attempts at partition.
  • Establishing a national reconstruction fund, partially financed by recovered oil and gas revenues, to be distributed equitably among affected areas, with a significant portion allocated to renewable energy projects (solar and wind) to achieve self-sufficiency and create sustainable job opportunities.
  • Strengthening sovereignty through international agreements that guarantee the non-return of terrorism, along with programs to rehabilitate and reintegrate former fighters into society, and supporting women and youth as active forces in the reconstruction process.

The Syrian Future Movement warns against the dangers of foreign interference and affirms its commitment to supporting all national efforts to build a free, unified, and prosperous future Syria, based on citizenship rather than sectarianism, and contributing to regional peace. We also call upon all parties—the wise men of Suwaida, the leaders of the various communities, and the government—to immediately engage in this path to heal the wounds of the past and build a better tomorrow for our future generations.
