The Syrian Future Movement follows with grave concern and a profound sense of national responsibility the annual report issued by the Syrian Network for Human Rights on arbitrary arrests during 2025, which documented at least 1,108 cases, with the Syrian Democratic Forces responsible for the vast majority, in addition to cases recorded by the Syrian Interim Government forces and other factions.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that while this report indicates a significant decrease in the number of arrests compared to previous years under the rule of the ousted regime, it reminds us that the transitional phase in Syria still faces serious challenges in establishing the principles of the rule of law and institutions.
Arbitrary arrest, regardless of who carries it out, remains a blatant violation of citizens’ fundamental rights, especially when it affects children and women, as the report documented 73 children and 26 women among the victims.
We in the Syrian Future Movement commend the widespread releases that have taken place in government detention centers, which in some months exceeded the number of new arrests, and we see this as a positive step towards ending the legacy of past injustices. However, the continued practice of arbitrary arrests without strict legal oversight, particularly in areas east of the Euphrates, threatens national unity and hinders the building of trust among the various components of the Syrian people.
The Syrian Future Movement, born from the Syrian revolution of 2012, is committed to building a modern, civil state based on freedom, citizenship, and social justice, and rejects any practice that contradicts these principles. Therefore, we call for:
- An immediate halt to all arbitrary arrests by all parties, and the subjection of any security measures to an independent judiciary.
- A comprehensive reform of the security and judicial apparatus, guaranteeing the transparency of procedures and the protection of detainees’ rights.
- International support for transitional justice mechanisms, including international institutions specializing in uncovering the fate of the missing.
- An inclusive national dialogue that brings together all active forces to formulate legal frameworks that protect freedoms and prevent the return of tyranny in any form.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the new Syria we aspire to is a free, unified, and independent Syria, where there is no place for oppression or revenge, but rather for fair accountability and national reconciliation. Our bright future requires everyone to have a firm commitment to the rule of law. The revolution that overthrew the tyrant must be completed by building a homeland worthy of the sacrifices of our great people.
