Opening of the first pharmaceutical salt production line in Syria

The Syrian Future Movement warmly welcomes and deeply appreciates the inauguration of the first pharmaceutical salt production line in Syria, launched today at the Miamed Pharmaceutical Industries plant in rural Damascus. The line boasts a production capacity of 900-1000 tons annually of pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride and sodium chloride for injection, adhering to the highest international standards.

We believe this achievement represents a genuine qualitative leap forward in restoring national health and economic sovereignty, after decades of complete reliance on imports, which exposed citizens to the risks of disruptions in global supply chains or geopolitical circumstances.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that this project is a cornerstone in building comprehensive pharmaceutical security, as pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride is a direct component in the production of intravenous solutions, dialysis solutions, and parenteral nutrition – all vital and indispensable preparations for surgical procedures, emergencies, and chronic diseases. Since fully meeting local demand saves millions of dollars annually in hard currency, enhances healthcare stability, and opens the door to exporting surplus production in the future, this contributes to strengthening the national economy and elevating Syria’s regional standing in the pharmaceutical industry.

The Syrian Future Movement views this achievement as embodying a comprehensive national vision that links immediate recovery with long-term sustainable development. It also reflects a commitment to localizing modern technologies—such as advanced drying techniques, specialized equipment, and metal alloys—that have entered Syria for the first time. This fosters knowledge transfer, develops national expertise, and builds an integrated industrial base capable of meeting future challenges.

Within its future vision, the Syrian Future Movement proposes a set of recommendations to consolidate this achievement and overcome potential challenges:

  • Immediately link the production line to sterile intravenous solution filling lines (which are often partially imported) through strategic public-private partnerships to produce the final product entirely locally.
  • Establish a national investment fund dedicated to developing pharmaceutical salts, partially financed by the economic savings resulting from reduced imports. This fund aims to expand production to include potassium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and other salts within the next three years.
  • Strengthen partnerships with Syrian universities (such as Damascus University and Aleppo University) to launch specialized training programs and joint research in purification and quality control, integrating artificial intelligence and automation technologies into production monitoring and ensuring compliance with USP/EP and GMP standards.
  • Adopt sustainable energy solutions (such as solar or wind power) to ensure operational stability amidst electricity challenges. Additionally, secure raw material sources (pure salt) through investments in local mines (such as those in Homs and Palmyra) to reduce costs and enhance self-sufficiency.
  • Seek international accreditations (such as from the World Health Organization or European bodies) within two years to enable exports to neighboring countries and open new markets.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on the government, the private sector, and partner international organizations to intensify efforts to launch similar projects in other vital sectors, such as the production of generic drugs, vaccines, medical devices, and specialized pharmaceuticals. This should be achieved through incentive packages that include five-year tax exemptions, streamlined licensing procedures, and direct technical support. The ultimate goal is to achieve comprehensive self-sufficiency in pharmaceuticals, exceeding 90%, during the 2026-2030 strategic plan. This will protect Syrians from global fluctuations and ensure genuine economic independence.

The Syrian Future Movement reaffirms its commitment to supporting all national development initiatives, emphasizing that Syria’s future is built on science, innovation, and national unity.

Therefore, we call on all Syrians—both inside and outside the country—to participate in this endeavor, so that we may build a strong, healthy, and prosperous nation that guarantees the well-being of future generations and restores its rightful place among nations.
