International Day of Peaceful Coexistence

The Syrian Future Movement extends its warmest congratulations to the noble Syrian people and to all the peoples of the world on the occasion of the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence, established by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/79/269 of March 4, 2025, declaring January 28 of each year as an international day to celebrate this supreme human value.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that peaceful coexistence transcends the mere absence of conflict; it encompasses building cohesive societies based on respect for diversity, the elimination of discrimination, and the promotion of inclusive dialogue, grounded in the principles of the UN Charter, which affirm sovereign equality, the peaceful settlement of disputes, the prohibition of the use of force or the threat of force, and the promotion of friendly relations among peoples.

The Syrian Future Movement views this day as a golden opportunity for Syria, which has recovered from years of bitter conflict, to strengthen the culture of peace and coexistence as the foundation for a successful political transition.

In this context, the Syrian Future Movement calls on all Syrian parties—especially the military forces and the transitional government—to seize this opportunity to solidify the values of peaceful coexistence through concrete, practical steps, including:

  • Accelerating the formation of joint national committees comprising representatives from all Syrian components (military, political, civil, religious, and ethnic) to draft a “National Charter for Peaceful Coexistence” that defines mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of local conflicts and guarantees the participation of all in decision-making.
  • Launching joint training and awareness programs for military and security forces in the areas of human rights, combating hate speech, and building mutual trust, in cooperation with specialized international organizations and Syrian research centers.
  • Activating local reconciliation mechanisms in affected areas by forming neutral local reconciliation councils, supported by the transitional government, to address historical disputes and facilitate social reintegration, with specific budgets allocated for this purpose within the reconstruction plan.
  • Reforming educational curricula to promote the values of tolerance and diversity, and including courses on the history of coexistence in Syria throughout the ages, along with student exchange programs between different regions.
  • Establishing an independent national media platform focused on disseminating success stories of coexistence and combating rumors and incitement, in partnership with local and international media outlets.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for building a new social contract based on the supreme interest of the Syrian people and all its components, establishing a strong and cohesive state with neutral and inclusive institutions that protect rights and freedoms without discrimination, and rebuild trust through a serious and continuous national dialogue that includes all parties.

The Syrian Future Movement draws inspiration from Syria’s rich heritage—the land of successive civilizations, the cradle of religions, and the meeting place of peoples—which has embodied a model of coexistence between Muslims, Christians, Jews, Druze, Alawites, and others throughout the centuries in cities such as Damascus, Aleppo, and Homs. We believe this genetic, cultural, and religious legacy must be revived today as the foundation of the new Syrian state and as a global source of inspiration for building peace.

The Syrian Future Movement calls on the international community to support these efforts by providing technical and financial assistance for reconciliation, education, and media programs, and by strengthening democratic institutions that protect rights.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that peaceful coexistence is a global necessity in the face of shared challenges such as climate change, terrorism, and displacement, and that it can only be achieved through concerted international efforts.

The Syrian Future Movement reaffirms its unwavering commitment to building a free, unified, and pluralistic Syria where every citizen lives in dignity and security, free from tyranny and extremism.

On this day, we renew our pledge to work tirelessly to make peaceful coexistence a daily reality in every corner of our homeland, contributing to a world of peace and justice for future generations.
