Two Syrian citizens drowned in the Al-Kabir River on the Syrian-Lebanese border.

The Syrian Future Movement is following with grave concern and deep sorrow the details of the tragic incident that occurred on December 27, 2025, in which Syrian citizens lost their lives while attempting to cross the Nahr al-Kabir al-Janoubi River on the border with neighboring Lebanon. This resulted in the drowning and disappearance of several people, including women and children. This human tragedy reflects the profound suffering endured by the Syrian people due to years of forced displacement and dire economic and security conditions.

We in the Syrian Future Movement express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the missing, and we pray that God will have mercy on the souls of those who drowned and grant safety and recovery to the survivors and those still missing.

We also commend the efforts of the Syrian Civil Defense teams and all relevant authorities in their ongoing rescue operations, despite the challenging weather and field conditions.

The Syrian Future Movement calls for a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances of the incident, in coordination with relevant international organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to identify the root causes and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies. We further urge that the investigation focus on the role of illegal smuggling networks and the conditions that drive citizens to risk their lives. The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the necessity of strengthening Syrian-Lebanese cooperation in managing the border in a humane and safe manner. This includes opening safe, official crossings for the voluntary return of refugees and implementing joint agreements that protect human rights and guarantee the safety of those crossing. Syria, now in a phase of reconstruction and stabilization, must be committed to building bridges of cooperation with its sister nations to ensure the dignified return of its citizens.

The Syrian Future Movement calls upon the international community and humanitarian organizations to provide immediate support for rescue operations, including the provision of specialized divers and advanced reconnaissance equipment, as well as long-term support for rehabilitation programs for Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Syria.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that Syria’s future depends on national unity and the preservation of human dignity. We also call upon all parties to transcend political differences and focus their efforts on the humanitarian aspect, in order to build a free and safe Syria for all its citizens.
