The celebration of the victory of the Syrian revolution and a speech by Professor Nimat Daoud, member of the Presidential Council of the Kurdish National Council

Statement of the Kurdish National Council

At the celebration held by the Syrian Future Movement on the first anniversary of liberation

Brothers and sisters in the Syrian Future Movement, greetings to you all. We thank you for inviting us to share in commemorating this great anniversary with the dawn of a new Syria. We, the survivors, share with the martyrs who are alive with their Lord, receiving sustenance, and with the displaced, the missing, and all those who suffered in our homeland, their joy on the day the head of the regime fled and his despotic system collapsed. This system subjected Syrians to all kinds of oppression and suffering, killing, destroying, and displacing for fourteen years. It violated the dignity of Syrians for decades, denied the national role of the Kurds and their leaders from the time of resistance against the French Mandate until this day, and targeted the national existence of the Kurdish people with abhorrent racist projects. This culminated in the killing of more than thirty Kurdish citizens with live ammunition in 2004 during the events at the Qamishli stadium and during the funeral processions of the martyrs. It was then that Kurdish youth, for the first time, toppled the idol of Hafez al-Assad. In Amuda, twenty years later, December 8, 2024, became a landmark event worldwide, marking the beginning of the end of Syrian suffering. It was a day made possible by the sacrifices of all Syrians—men and women, Muslims, Christians, Yazidis, Arabs, Kurds, Syriac Assyrians, Turkmen, and others—who gave their all for their freedom, dignity, and the dawn of a new Syria.

In Amuda, twenty years later, December 8, 2024, became a significant global event, signifying the beginning of the end of Syrian suffering. We, the Kurdish National Council in Syria, which has a long history of opposing dictatorship and the regime, and whose members and cadres have faced persecution and imprisonment since the 1960s, affirm on this historic occasion that the joy of the Syrian people will not be complete with the demise of the tyrannical and corrupt regime, but rather with the realization of their aspirations for which they have sacrificed: the establishment of a just state that safeguards the freedom and dignity of all citizens, ensures their security, safety, and a decent life, and above all, fosters harmony and peace. To achieve this in the current reality of the Syrian people, the Council calls upon the transitional administration and President Ahmed al-Sharaa to adopt an approach of openness and dialogue with all national, political, and social components, and to guarantee their active participation in the decision-making process for building the desired state. The Council also believes that ignoring the Kurdish issue and addressing it with mere rhetoric and well-intentioned statements—which we appreciate—is insufficient and does not serve the path of reconstruction and stability. It calls for translating words into actions and engaging in dialogue with the unified Kurdish delegation, agreed upon by the Kurds, which holds a vision for the future of Syria and a solution to the Kurdish issue within the framework of national unity.

The Syrian people, with their glorious history, are innocent of the hate speech and incitement sown by the former regime. This recently emerged rhetoric undermines the foundations of justice and equality in the desired state. It is incumbent upon the government and all of us to deter this abhorrent phenomenon and hold the perpetrators accountable. The best response is to strengthen the culture of coexistence, protect civil peace, and constitutionally guarantee the rights of all its components.

The Syria we aspire to is a more beautiful Syria—a Syria of freedom and dignity, a democratic and decentralized Syria with a multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious identity, built and preserved by the will of its people and their genuine partnership.

Mercy to the martyrs and a safe return for the displaced and missing.
