Preventing harassment of educational staff within schools

The Syrian Future Movement is following with great interest and satisfaction the Syrian Ministry of Interior’s announcement of directives aimed at preventing the harassment of educational staff within schools and ensuring a safe and respectful working environment for teachers and employees in educational institutions.

The Syrian Future Movement considers this decision a turning point in the reform of the Syrian educational system, as it confirms the state’s shift from a logic of control to one of protection and empowerment, within the framework of building a state of law and institutions after the transitional phase.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that this step reflects a fundamental cultural and administrative shift in the philosophy of governance and demonstrates the new Syrian state’s commitment to establishing respect for the dignity of those working in the educational field.

This step also affirms that the school must be a space for knowledge and social justice, free from any discrimination or psychological or administrative pressure on educators and teachers, and that protecting teachers is protecting national identity itself.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the success of this initiative requires a comprehensive system of practical measures, including:

  1. Establishing an independent educational oversight unit to follow up on cases of abuse or harassment against educational staff.
  2. Activating a secure and confidential complaints system within schools and educational administrations.
  3. Approval of an urgent financial reform package to improve the salaries of education workers, ensuring they are commensurate with the minimum cost of living and guaranteeing teachers’ dignity and economic independence.
  4. Review of the salary scale and job grades for teachers and educational supervisors to reflect the social value of their profession and incentivize young talent to remain in the education sector.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that improving teachers’ income is an integral part of educational security. A teacher suffering from financial hardship cannot perform their duties effectively or adhere to professional ethics.

Therefore, the Syrian Future Movement calls on the transitional government to prioritize the education sector in the general budget and allocate a stable percentage of the GDP to education, while monitoring the implementation of these commitments according to the principles of social justice.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that national security is not achieved through weapons alone, but also through knowledge, awareness, and moral responsibility.

Teachers are the cornerstone of building this awareness, making their material and moral support a matter of paramount national and cultural security. Protecting the dignity of teachers and shielding them from economic and administrative pressures is fundamental to eradicating the sources of ignorance, extremism, and division within Syrian society.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that raising the salaries of educational staff must be viewed as part of a comprehensive national project for educational reform, encompassing:

  • Updating curricula and freeing them from outdated ideologies.
  • Implementing continuous training and professional development programs for teachers.
  • Ensuring a suitable school environment in terms of infrastructure and services.
  • Improving the living conditions of teachers to restore their social and material standing and recognize their central role in national development.

While the Syrian Future Movement welcomes the Ministry of Interior’s decision and appreciates the transitional government’s commitment to protecting educational staff, it emphasizes that raising teachers’ salaries and guaranteeing their dignified living conditions are essential for the advancement of education in Syria.

There can be no national renaissance without a free school system, and no free school system without a respected teacher capable of fulfilling their mission.

While calling on all state institutions and civil society to work together to establish a culture of respect for teachers, the Syrian Future Movement affirms its full commitment to defending the rights of workers in the educational field, considering them the heart and living spirit of the “Syria of the Future” project.
