The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the participation of “Caesar” Farid al-Mazhan, a prominent figure in Syrian-American community organizations, and his return to Washington next week to testify before the US Congress. He will appeal to the free people of America, on humanitarian and moral grounds, to stand once again with the Syrian people, demanding the repeal of the Caesar Act now that its justification—the Assad regime’s killing and destruction machine—has ceased to exist. We see this participation as an important step reflecting the seriousness of Syrians inside and outside the country in engaging with the requirements of the transitional phase and contributing to the political and economic transformation underway.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the participation of Syrian figures before international institutions is a significant indicator of the vitality of Syrian society and the broad national readiness to cooperate in order to successfully build a just and civil state, and to reconnect efforts between those inside Syria and the diaspora in a way that serves the interests of the Syrian people.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that any review of sanctions, including the Caesar Act, must be conducted with a balanced approach that ensures the protection of the Syrian people’s interests and alleviates their economic and humanitarian burdens, without compromising the requirements of justice and accountability. This approach must also guarantee that any amendment to the sanctions is not exploited by entities that do not represent the spirit or objectives of the transitional phase.
In this context, the Syrian Future Movement calls on the US Congress to provide direct and unequivocal support to the Syrian people during this critical juncture. It urges the Congress to strengthen cooperation with Syrian civil and political institutions working towards stability and development, to consolidate the democratic transition, to create the conditions for the return of refugees, and to restore state institutions to their proper role as guarantors of rights and freedoms.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the success of the current phase depends fundamentally on the solidarity of the Syrian people and their ability to unite their efforts to advance genuine reforms that reflect their sacrifices and aspirations for building a new Syria based on citizenship, justice, and the rule of law.
