On this day, October 20, the Syrian Future Movement commemorates World Osteoporosis Day, a global health event aimed at raising awareness of the importance of preventing this silent disease, which afflicts millions around the world and is one of the leading causes of disability and suffering among the elderly, especially women. This day was first launched in 1996 by the National Osteoporosis Society in the United Kingdom, with support from the European Commission. It was later organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), and has since become an annual global event with the participation of more than 90 countries.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of consolidating the values embodied by this day, most notably:
- Prevention before treatment, by raising awareness of the importance of early detection and a healthy lifestyle.
- Social responsibility, involving individuals and institutions in protecting bone health.
- Health equity, by ensuring that awareness and screening reach all groups, especially marginalized groups.
- Health sustainability, and building preventive systems that reduce long-term health and economic burdens.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that osteoporosis, as well as being a health issue, is also an indicator of the state and society’s concern for human health, especially in light of the food and psychological crises and prolonged displacement that Syrians have endured, negatively impacting bone health, particularly among women and the elderly.
The Syrian Future Movement calls for consolidating the values of this day in Syria through:
- Launching national awareness campaigns on osteoporosis prevention, targeting schools, health centers, and local communities.
- Integrating bone density tests into primary healthcare programs.
- Promoting a culture of healthy nutrition, encouraging physical activity, and safe sun exposure as effective preventative measures.
- Supporting scientific research in the field of bone diseases and training medical personnel on early diagnosis and treatment.
- Cooperating with international organizations to provide technical and logistical support in developing national programs to combat osteoporosis.
In commemorating this occasion, the Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that building a new Syria is not limited to physical reconstruction, but also includes rebuilding the human being—health, psychology, and society. A society with healthy individuals is a society capable of progressing, participating, and shaping the future.
