The Syrian Future Movement, along with peoples of the world, commemorates World Day for Decent Work, which falls on October 7th of each year. This day was launched by the International Labor Organization (ILO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, with the aim of promoting the concept of decent work as a fundamental human right and ensuring the availability of employment opportunities that respect dignity, achieve social justice, and provide a safe and fair environment for all.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that decent work is not a social luxury, but a national necessity for building the future of Syria, a state of justice and citizenship that places people at the heart of development and guarantees their right to productive, safe, and creative work.
The Syrian Future Movement considers this day significant because it was designated in 2008 by the International Labor Organization (ILO). It aims to highlight the challenges facing workers around the world in terms of wages, job security, equality, and the lack of social protection. This day serves as a global platform for demanding economic and social policies that guarantee justice in the labor market.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that, in light of Syria’s deep economic and social crises and the disintegration of state institutions, consolidating decent work requires:
- Rebuilding state institutions based on transparency and accountability.
- Establishing national employment policies that guarantee equal opportunities and equal wages.
- Supporting the local private sector and providing a legal environment that protects workers’ rights.
- Strengthening the role of independent unions as a tool for defending workers’ rights.
- Integrating the concept of decent work into educational curricula and vocational training.
Accordingly, the Syrian Future Movement recommends the following:
- Initiating a comprehensive national dialogue on employment and decent work policies in Syria.
- Adopting new legislation that guarantees a minimum wage, protection against unfair dismissal, and ensuring health and social insurance.
- Empowering women and youth in the labor market and combating all forms of discrimination.
- Acceding international agreements related to labor and trade union rights.
- Establishing a national observatory for decent work to monitor violations and make recommendations. The Syrian Future Movement renews its commitment to the struggle for a just, free, and productive Syria, in which decent work is the cornerstone of human and social development. We have emphasized this in our previous positions and proposals, stating that we will devote all our capabilities to any proposal or project that benefits Syrian workers and mitigates the impact of the severe economic crisis. This includes the Economic Bureau’s study entitled “Workers in Northern Syria,” published on our official website on May 4, 2024.
