Termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian nationals residing in the United States

The Syrian Future Movement is following with deep concern and national responsibility the decision issued by the US Department of Homeland Security to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian citizens residing in the US, scheduled to take effect on November 21, 2025.

This decision, which comes within the framework of a review of US immigration and asylum policies, is based on an official assessment of the improvement in the security and humanitarian situation in Syria following the political transformations the country has witnessed, most notably the collapse of the authoritarian regime that had ruled Syria for decades.
While the Syrian Future Movement acknowledges that the country has begun to move towards a new phase of national recovery, it believes that this assessment does not accurately reflect the extent of the challenges that remain in a number of Syrian regions, whether at the security, economic, or service levels.

The Syrian Future Movement expresses its deep concern about the potential humanitarian repercussions of this decision for thousands of Syrians who found safe haven in the United States during the war years, building their lives and communities there. We also believe that the sixty-day deadline, while significant, remains insufficient to ensure a safe and dignified return unless it is accompanied by flexible transitional measures and clear international guarantees that respect the rights of returnees and provide them with the foundations for a dignified life.

Accordingly, the Syrian Future Movement calls on the US administration to reconsider the mechanisms for implementing the decision, including the possibility of extending legal status for some humanitarian cases, or launching joint support programs that ensure a smooth transition that respects the dignity of the Syrian people. The movement also calls on the international community, humanitarian organizations, and friendly countries to intensify their efforts to support the Syrian reconstruction process and provide employment and educational opportunities, making voluntary return a realistic and sustainable option.

In this context, the Syrian Future Movement affirms its unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom and its commitment to building a new Syria based on justice and citizenship. It also emphasizes the importance of responsible dialogue between governments and civil societies to address migration and asylum issues in a spirit of cooperation and human solidarity, free from narrow considerations.

The Syrian Future Movement will continue to monitor this vital issue and work with all concerned parties to ensure that the return of Syrians to their homeland is a step toward stability and prosperity, rather than an additional burden to their suffering.
