Joint committees to discuss the files of prisoners, missing persons, and common borders

As part of efforts to enhance regional stability and address the outstanding humanitarian and security issues between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Lebanese Republic, the announcement of the formation of joint committees between the two countries to discuss the issues of prisoners, missing persons, and border control represents a historic diplomatic step, as judicial and security sources revealed to the Associated Press on September 1, 2025.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that this initiative, which coincides with the visit of a Syrian delegation to Beirut, should reflect a shared political will to open a new page in bilateral relations, based on the principles of mutual sovereignty and constructive cooperation.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that this initiative presents an opportunity to enhance regional stability and facilitate the return of Syrian refugees, in addition to strengthening security and economic cooperation. We welcome this initiative as a hope for revealing the fate of detainees and a step toward transitional justice.

The Syrian Future Movement warns that this initiative will face opposition from some Lebanese political factions that recall the former Syrian military presence, fearing any form of interference in Lebanese sovereignty. Hezbollah and its allies may also express reservations about it, given tensions with the new Syrian administration, raising concerns that their influence will be undermined.

We, in the Syrian Future Movement, demand greater legal guarantees and transparency to ensure the effectiveness of the committees, while cautioning against them being merely a formal step without tangible results.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the success of these committees depends on the parties’ commitment to the principles of transparency and accountability, with the participation of independent international observers to ensure their fair implementation. We also call on all concerned parties to overcome historical differences and adopt a cooperative approach that serves the interests of the Syrian and Lebanese people, contributing to building a shared future based on peace and justice.
