The Syrian Future Movement followed with great interest the meeting held in Idlib Governorate on September 21, 2025, which brought together Governor Mohammed Abdul Rahman and Minister of Defense Major General Marhaf Abu Qusra. The meeting emphasized the need to move ammunition depots away from residential areas and to intensify efforts to remove mines and remnants of war.
We, in the Syrian Future Movement, consider this move a step in the right direction. However, it is not enough unless it is translated into binding practical measures, based on a comprehensive national vision that recalibrates the relationship between arms and society and places the safety of civilians at the forefront of priorities.
In this context, we reaffirm what was stated in our previous statement entitled:
“The Necessity of Recalibrating the Relationship between Arms and Society”
issued on July 25, 2025, which stated:
“The Syrian Future Movement calls for a binding national decision, issued by a legitimate, unified Syrian authority, prohibiting the storage of weapons and ammunition near residential areas and camps, and establishing an independent, professional oversight body to oversee storage and destruction operations in accordance with internationally recognized safety standards.”
The Syrian Future Movement believes that the continued presence of ammunition depots in the heart of residential areas poses a direct threat to civilian lives and exacerbates the suffering of local communities already suffering from the effects of war and displacement. Therefore, we call on the relevant authorities in Idlib and across Syria to take urgent steps to relocate these depots to safe locations and activate oversight and accountability mechanisms to ensure the safety of civilians and restore trust between the community and local authorities.
The Syrian Future Movement calls for the involvement of civil society in monitoring the implementation of these measures, while ensuring military confidentiality, providing the necessary support to victims of explosions and mines, and ensuring their material and moral compensation.
The Syrian Future Movement will continue to defend the rights of civilians and work to build a safe, civil Syria, free of the tools of death, governed by law and governed by institutions.
