France issues arrest warrants for Bashar al-Assad

The Syrian Future Movement welcomes the important step taken by the French judiciary in issuing seven international arrest warrants on August 2, 2025, for senior officials in the ousted Syrian regime, including Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, Ali Mamlouk, Ali Ayoub, and Rafiq Shehadeh. This arrest warrant was issued in connection with the bombing of a media center in the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs on February 22, 2012, which resulted in the deaths of American journalist Marie Colvin and French photographer Rémi Ochlik, and the injury of others.

The Syrian Future Movement considers this decision an important milestone in the process of achieving justice and holding accountable the perpetrators of crimes against humanity in Syria. Targeting journalists who documented the crimes of the ousted regime reflects a systematic approach to suppressing the truth and silencing free voices. We also appreciate the efforts of human rights organizations, including the International Federation for Human Rights and the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression, which contributed to documenting these crimes and providing evidence to international courts.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms its full support for all international efforts aimed at holding accountable those responsible for crimes against the Syrian people. It calls for intensified cooperation between states and international organizations, including INTERPOL, to ensure the implementation of these warrants and bring the perpetrators to justice. We also demand continued investigations into all crimes committed by the former regime, including chemical attacks and indiscriminate bombing of civilians.

Achieving justice is the only way to build the future Syria—the Syria of freedom and dignity to which our Syrian people aspire. We, in the Syrian Future Movement, renew our commitment to working for a just, democratic Syria that respects human rights and ensures accountability for all crimes committed against its people.
