Developments in the Syrian chemical file

The Syrian Future Movement is following the positive developments in the Syrian chemical weapons file and welcomes the progress announced by the United Nations in its latest report, despite the significant difficulties facing this process. This progress, announced on September 13, 2025, reflects the full and transparent cooperation of the new Syrian authorities with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and constitutes a fundamental step toward finally eliminating the legacy of the former criminal regime, which used these toxic weapons against the Syrian people. The High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, indicated the discovery of more than 100 potential sites linked to chemical activities, in addition to 26 declared sites, with plans to visit them when security conditions are met. Samples from one site also showed indications of neurotoxic substances, raising grave concerns about undeclared quantities of chemical warfare agents and munitions. Nevertheless, Nakamitsu commended the commendable cooperation of the new Damascus, considering the current phase a “crucial opportunity” to clarify the full scope of the Syrian chemical program. The Syrian Future Movement, through the assertion made by Syria’s new permanent representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, in his first speech before the Security Council, emphasizes Syria’s commitment to the complete elimination of these weapons, considering this a “national priority” based on the belief in the victims’ right to justice and the prevention of recurrence. We emphasize Olabi’s reference to the complexity of the former regime’s chemical weapons program due to its secrecy and complex security structure.

The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its accusation that Israel has complicated investigations through its military attacks, such as the July 2025 attack that targeted sites in Damascus, including a building used by OPCW teams, leading to the postponement of the mission.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that this progress represents a victory for the will of the Syrian people to build a free and secure state, free from the crimes of the deposed regime. We also call on the international community to provide the necessary support to overcome difficulties, including security concerns and unresolved issues, to ensure the complete destruction of these weapons and the accountability of the perpetrators. We warn against any attempts to obstruct this process, whether through external intervention or the exploitation of security vacuums. The future of Syria deserves to be a model of justice and peace, and we, in the Syrian Future Movement, will continue our efforts to build bridges of love among all citizens of the country to realize this vision.
