The Syrian Future Movement is following with deep concern the repercussions of the horrific explosion that occurred at an ammunition depot near the town of Maarat Misrin in the Idlib countryside on Thursday, July 25, 2025. The explosion resulted in civilian casualties, most of them residents of the nearby camps.
The extent of the human and material destruction, and the location of the explosion, which overlapped with residential neighborhoods, once again reveal the depth of the flawed management of the arms issue outside the legitimate national framework. They raise fundamental questions about the responsibility of military forces toward civil society and the absence of safety and transparency in ammunition storage.
The Syrian Future Movement holds all active military and civilian actors in the region fully morally and legally responsible for this incident. We call for an independent and transparent investigation, subject to international standards and supervised by impartial legal and field experts.
The Syrian Future Movement calls for a binding national decision, issued by a comprehensive, legitimate Syrian authority, prohibiting the storage of weapons and ammunition near residential areas and camps, and establishing an independent, professional oversight body to oversee storage and destruction operations in accordance with internationally recognized safety standards.
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the continuation of these practices reflects the absence of a social-military contract, threatens what remains of trust between citizens and the supposed protective authority, and undermines efforts to build a national army governed by the law, not loyalty, and that places human life at the core of its doctrine.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on all political and civil forces to transform this tragedy into a turning point in the public debate on restructuring the military and security sector in Syria, and to place the principles of safety, accountability, and professionalism at the heart of the desired constitutional and institutional reform.
The Syrian Future Movement believes that protecting civilians is not a political choice, but rather the cornerstone of any comprehensive national project. The absence of security is not fate, but rather the result of systematic behaviors that can—and must—be changed.
