On World Tuna Day

The Syrian Future Movement reminds us on May 1st, which the world celebrates as World Tuna Day, that this occasion serves to raise awareness about the importance of this marine resource and its vital role in global food security. Tuna is not merely a commercial commodity, but a key element in ecological balance and a resource that must be utilized with awareness and responsibility to ensure its sustainability for future generations.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that although Syria possesses a rich coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, the utilization of tuna resources remains limited. The local market mainly depends on imports instead of developing a sustainable marine fishing sector. Therefore, we see this day as an opportunity to call on relevant entities to invest in modern fishing technologies, support fishermen, and develop their capabilities, which would create new economic opportunities and strengthen self-sufficiency in this field.

The Syrian Future Movement stresses the need to combat overfishing and illegal fishing practices, such as the use of dynamite, which threatens marine life and leads to the loss of natural resources. We also call for enhanced regional cooperation in managing fishery resources to prevent the depletion of tuna stocks in the Mediterranean Sea and to implement policies that preserve the rights of future generations to these resources.

The Syrian Future Movement sees World Tuna Day not merely as an environmental occasion, but as a call to rethink economic and environmental policies, so that a balance can be struck between market needs and nature conservation. Investing in this sector will not only benefit the economy but will also contribute to achieving food security and enhancing environmental sustainability.

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that preserving marine resources is part of our responsibility toward the environment and society, and we call on everyone—individuals and institutions—to take active steps to protect these resources and ensure their responsible and sustainable use.
