The Syrian Future Movement is following with deep concern the announcement made by the Syrian Ministry of Health during the press conference held on Wednesday, 26/3/20205, under the title “Urgent Humanitarian Appeal: A Severe Crisis in the Availability of Cancer Drugs in Syria and Its Impact on Cancer Patients.” The ministry warned of catastrophic consequences threatening the lives of thousands of patients due to the acute shortage of life-saving medications.
The Syrian Future Movement, while expressing our deep humanitarian solidarity with the patients and their families in this difficult ordeal, affirms that the crisis of essential drug shortages, especially those used in cancer treatment, constitutes a blatant violation of the fundamental right to health and life. This right is guaranteed by international conventions, which obligate all parties to ensure it without discrimination.
The Syrian Future Movement calls on the international community, relevant United Nations organizations, and active humanitarian bodies to take urgent action to bridge this dangerous gap by providing the necessary medical supplies and overcoming logistical and legal obstacles that hinder their access to the most affected areas.
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of strengthening cooperation between Syrian government entities and international organizations to facilitate the opening of sustainable humanitarian channels and ensure transparency in the distribution of medical aid. It is essential to subject this process to neutral monitoring mechanisms to guarantee its delivery to patients without exploitation or bias.
The Syrian Future Movement considers the continued suffering of patients, particularly children and the elderly, amid ongoing war conditions and their repercussions, a reminder to the world of its moral responsibilities toward the Syrian people, who are paying an unbearable human cost due to political complexities and accumulated humanitarian crises.
The Syrian civil political movement views this appeal as an opportunity to enhance constructive dialogue among all active parties, both locally and internationally, and to revive the principle of humanitarian solidarity as a priority above all other considerations. We also demand that this appeal be translated into a concrete action plan that includes securing sufficient funding, facilitating the entry of medicines through all available crossings, and supporting operational medical centers within Syria with qualified personnel and sustainable resources.
The Syrian Future Movement reminds that patients’ rights should not be hostage to conflicts and that saving lives is a collective responsibility that cannot be postponed. Therefore, we call for unifying regional and international efforts to contain this crisis before it worsens, reaffirming that Syria’s stability and reconstruction begin with protecting the lives of its citizens.
