Dr. Farouk Taha

  • Son of the city of Zabadani, Dr. Farouk Taha was born in the Syrian city of Qatana on September 27, 1948.
  • Married to the honorable Mrs. “Falak Taha.”
  • Received his secondary education in Syria, between the schools of Damascus, Zabadani, and Qatana.
  • Holds a Ph.D. in Arts from Moscow State University M.V. Lomonosov, a specialized diploma in International Law, a diploma from the Russian Diplomatic Academy, and a Master’s in Arts (Media).
  • Supervised many theses, research papers, and scientific papers, and participated in numerous international scientific and professional conferences and forums.
  • Fluent in English and Russian, and proficient in German.
  • Began his government career in the Syrian Arab Republic since early 1968.
  • Worked in the diplomatic corps at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1986 and became the “First Secretary” at the Syrian Embassy in Moscow in 1988, later promoted to “Counselor” at the embassy in 1992.
  • Appointed as “Minister Counselor” at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1995, and between 1994 and 1997, served as the “Assistant Director” of Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Ministry in Damascus.
  • Served as Minister Counselor and then as Chargé d’Affaires at the Syrian Embassy in Vienna, from 1997 to 2000, and as Syria’s representative to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
  • Headed the mission as Chargé d’Affaires at the embassy in Sanaa, later becoming the “Extraordinary Ambassador” and “Plenipotentiary of the Syrian Arab Republic” to the Republic of Yemen, from 2000 to 2002.
  • Managed the Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 2004 to 2006, and continued until 2007 as “Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria.”
  • Appointed as “Extraordinary Ambassador” and “Plenipotentiary of the Syrian Arab Republic” in the following years:
    To the Republic of Belarus in 2007.
    To the Republics of Lithuania and Latvia (non-resident) in 2009.
    To the Republic of Estonia (non-resident) in 2010.
  • Announced his defection from the Syrian regime on July 27, 2012, to clearly stand with his people’s revolution against injustice and tyranny, and to support his homeland and its people, rejecting the repressive security solution and warning of its consequences.
  • Participated in many activities and conferences of the Syrian opposition.
  • Co-founder of the Free National Gathering for the Employees of the Syrian State Institutions.
  • The Syrian regime completely destroyed his residence in Zabadani through an aerial bombardment.
