Dr. Sheikh Ihssan Baadarani
A researcher, thinker, writer, and Islamic preacher, born in Hama, Syria / Dabagha, on January 1, 1947.
Married to the Islamic preacher Nabigha Babili, with whom he has five children, the eldest being his son Dr. Zaher, the president of Syrian Future movement, followed by the engineer Oways, Tasneem, Meysan, and Samh al-Din Baadarani.
Dr. Ihssan participated in Arabization efforts in Algeria between 1967–1969.
He earned a degree in Arabic Language and Literature from Damascus University in 1970.
He obtained a license in religious teaching in 1980, a degree in Islamic and Arabic Studies in 1990, a master’s degree in 1995, and a PhD in the Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence with first-class honors in 1997, and a Doctorate in Innovation in Islamic Jurisprudence and its Renewal in 2000.
He served as the Imam of the Marabitt Mosque in Damascus – Muhajireen district from 1988 to 2011.
He was a religious advisor at the Presidency of the Republic in Syria.
Advisor and member of the committee for developing Islamic education curricula and authoring its books in Syria from 2003 to 2011.
Head of the Religious Group at the Syrian Center for Strategic Studies from 2005 to 2011.
Member of the Arab Writers Union in Syria since 2008.
Participated and continues to participate in national, Arab, Islamic, and international conferences, seminars, and lectures before and after the Syrian revolution.
The first to criticize the Assad regime in Syria from the pulpit of the Marabitt Mosque, adjacent to Bashar al-Assad’s residence in the Muhajireen district, in his sermons dated April 1, 2011, and April 8, 2011.
The first scholar to be dismissed from all his official positions and jobs due to his opposition to the military solution in Syria after the outbreak of the Syrian revolution, dated April 10, 2011.
Left the Syrian capital Damascus on July 15, 2011, after facing numerous pressures, pursuits, and threats.
His sons Oways and Samh al-Din were arrested on November 15, 2011, for their activities in supporting the revolutionary movement in Damascus.
Met with officers of the Free Syrian Army in Turkey and united their ranks with a “Covenant of Honor and Allegiance,” signed by Colonel Riad al-Asaad and Brigadier General Mustafa al-Sheikh on January 13, 2012.
Held a press conference at the French Foreign Ministry building in Paris about the religious institution in Syria and its ties to the regime and security apparatuses on February 23, 2012.
His movable and immovable properties were confiscated on November 7, 2017.
Currently resides in Oslo, the capital of Norway, and continues his various activities in Norwegian and European mosques, centers, and Islamic associations.
