{"id":68333,"date":"2026-11-06T14:13:03","date_gmt":"2026-11-06T11:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sfuturem.org\/?p=68333"},"modified":"2026-11-06T14:14:46","modified_gmt":"2026-11-06T11:14:46","slug":"international-day-for-preventing-the-exploitation-of-the-environment-in-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sfuturem.org\/en\/2026\/11\/international-day-for-preventing-the-exploitation-of-the-environment-in-war\/","title":{"rendered":"International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">November 6th marks the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, an international occasion that comes at a time when our country is undergoing a historic and pivotal transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We in the Syrian Future Movement view environmental protection and the rehabilitation of ecosystems as a civilizational priority, a paramount developmental necessity, and a fundamental pillar of national and social security, without which no genuine or sustainable economic recovery can be achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian Future Movement views with deep concern the updated indicators and reports documenting the extent of the systematic destruction and severe depletion suffered by the Syrian environment, a &#8220;hidden victim&#8221; of more than a decade of conflict and destruction at the hands of the regime and its allies. The gravity of the current catastrophe is evident in the following figures and indicators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Destruction of Vegetation and Forests: Analytical data for 2026 indicates that Syria has lost approximately 29% of its tree and forest cover since the beginning of the conflict, as a result of shelling, fires that have recently consumed more than 14,000 hectares, and indiscriminate logging for heating and fuel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soil Degradation and War Remnants: UN reports document that Syrian lands are facing alarming levels of erosion and loss of fertility, with desertification now affecting 73% of the country&#8217;s total area. This is compounded by the deadly threat posed by war remnants and landmines, which hinder agricultural development and directly impact food security and the return of displaced persons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Severe Groundwater and Surface Water Crisis: Groundwater levels around Damascus have plummeted to unprecedented lows, reaching 65 meters, due to the haphazard drilling of over 50,000 wells during the war years to address water shortages. Meanwhile, the remaining drinking water networks in Damascus are only meeting 60% of the demand, amidst the drying up of vast areas of the Orontes River and the depletion of 164 vital dams due to the phenomenon of dead storage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cost of structural destruction: The World Bank estimates the cost of direct physical infrastructure damage at approximately $108 billion, while comprehensive and resilient reconstruction requires more than $215 billion. This necessitates integrating green reconstruction plans into these budgets to ensure that new waves of pollution are not generated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian Future Movement believes that the approach to humanitarian and development response in the current transitional phase must break with traditional, ad-hoc methods and adopt a national and institutional approach based on the following visions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Formulating a national green strategy for reconstruction by integrating environmental sustainability standards into all construction plans, relying on renewable energy sources, and expanding residential and industrial solar energy projects to mitigate carbon pollution and excessive dependence on diesel and fossil fuels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adopting transparency and building a unified environmental database by establishing a reliable and publicly accessible national database of environmental damage surveys and reports. This database should be managed by joint national and international oversight committees with the active participation of civil society organizations to prevent the exploitation of this data or aid for environmental or political purposes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local Water Committees and Participatory Resource Management: We propose establishing &#8220;Local Water and Environment Committees&#8221; in municipalities and governorates to involve local communities and farmers in the equitable management and distribution of water resources, thereby reducing local environmental conflicts and promoting social stability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Civilizational and Educational Commitment to Advocate for the inclusion of environmental awareness and sustainability content in the curricula of Syrian schools and universities, to cultivate a generation that fosters a civilized and responsible relationship with its land and natural resources as a fundamental human and national right.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p
