On this day, November 5, 2026, the Syrian Future Movement affirms that confronting major disasters and crises requires advanced scientific awareness and a robust institutional framework. Preparedness and readiness are essential pillars for protecting individuals and societies, and for ensuring the sustainability of civilizational progress.

The Syrian Future Movement views the international community’s observance of “World Tsunami Awareness Day”—established by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 70/203 of December 2015, following a proposal by Japan—as an embodiment of human solidarity in the face of devastating natural hazards.

This date is rooted in a historical event from 1854 in Japan, when a village leader made a conscious sacrifice by setting fire to his own crops to warn the villagers of approaching, massive waves. This act underscores the vital importance of “early warning” systems and the responsibility of leadership within a community.

The Syrian Future Movement draws attention to statistics from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO for 2025/2026, which confirm that while tsunamis are relatively rare, they rank among the deadliest of all disasters; over the past century, they have claimed more than 260,000 lives. Recent scientific reports indicate that global warming and rising sea levels are increasing the likelihood and risks of marine flooding—even within the Mediterranean basin—thereby creating an urgent need for modern monitoring systems along the Syrian coast and at its maritime gateways.

The Syrian Future Movement asserts that the significance of this day extends beyond natural hazards, intersecting directly with the current reality in Syria; the long years of conflict have unleashed a “political, humanitarian, and economic tsunami” that has swept away infrastructure and threatened civil peace.

The conditions of the transitional phase necessitate the construction of “national buffers” to protect Syrian society from compound disasters. In this context, the Syrian Future Movement proposes the following vision and strategic directions:

First: Establishing robust and flexible institutional governance for crisis and disaster management in a future Syria—governance capable of absorbing political, economic, and environmental shocks through strategic planning grounded in precise data.

Second: Investing in human capital and promoting scientific awareness within educational curricula and civic platforms, in order to embed the values of rapid response and early warning as core components of a culture of citizenship and the protection of life.

Third: Activating the role of civil society organizations as essential partners in community-based monitoring and logistical support, ensuring that awareness reaches the most vulnerable groups, and integrating the Syrian coast into regional and international monitoring networks.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the transition toward a modern, civilized, and developed civil state can only be achieved by possessing the scientific and institutional capacity to confront all challenges. Intelligent preparedness for crises is the true guarantee for preserving the dignity of the Syrian people and protecting their future from any storms or surging waves.

The importance of World Tsunami Awareness Day and its role in enhancing preparedness for natural disasters.

[4688
4856
post-68309","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-presidency-office-en","tag-congratulations-and-events
