October 6th marks International Geodiversity Day, a global environmental and developmental occasion unanimously adopted by UNESCO during its 41st General Conference in 2021.

This year, the day is observed under the UN theme “Geodiversity on Our Doorstep,” highlighting the immense importance of nature’s abiotic components—such as rocks, minerals, soil, water, and fossils—which serve as the fundamental foundation for biodiversity and humanity’s developmental stability.

International reports and statistics from UNESCO and partner environmental organizations reveal significant data: the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme oversees the protection of over 855,000 square kilometers, encompassing more than 229 Global Geoparks across 50 countries.

Technical reports also demonstrate that modern technology industries rely entirely on this diversity; for instance, the modern smartphone used daily contains more than 60 chemical elements and minerals extracted from the Earth’s crust, underscoring the intrinsic link between geological heritage and the future of sustainability and the digital economy.

The Syrian Future Movement asserts that protecting geodiversity and natural resources in Syria is a matter of sovereignty directly linked to national food and water security. Local soil and geological features form a solid foundation for supporting the agricultural sector and stabilizing local communities during the recovery phase and the rebuilding of a future Syria.

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the severe depletion, pollution, and infrastructure destruction inflicted upon Syria’s environment, water resources, and geological systems during the war necessitate the establishment of a rigorous national legislative framework for environmental protection and sustainable resource management, in alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Syrian Future Movement considers raising awareness of geological sciences—and integrating concepts of environmental stewardship and the preservation of Syria’s natural heritage into modern educational curricula—to be integral to the process of intellectual enlightenment and the promotion of a progressive culture that breaks with the legacy of systemic neglect regarding public services.

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the need to harness the potential of young Syrian professionals in the fields of geology, environmental science, and hydraulic engineering. It advocates for creating attractive research and career opportunities to stem the “brain drain” and to utilize their expertise in safe urban planning and disaster risk reduction—specifically regarding earthquakes and floods.

The Syrian Future Movement calls upon civil society organizations, local entities, and international partners to support projects aimed at monitoring and protecting Syria’s geological and natural reserves. It also urges future efforts to include unique Syrian sites in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, thereby boosting eco-tourism and driving sustainable, inclusive development.
