{"id":67182,"date":"2026-08-23T07:48:48","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T04:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sfuturem.org\/?p=67182"},"modified":"2026-08-23T07:50:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T04:50:53","slug":"international-day-for-the-remembrance-of-and-abolition-of-the-slave-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sfuturem.org\/en\/2026\/08\/international-day-for-the-remembrance-of-and-abolition-of-the-slave-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"International Day for the Remembrance of and Abolition of the Slave Trade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Syrian Future Movement joins the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the international community in commemorating the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, observed annually on August 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This historic occasion commemorates the pivotal uprising on the island of Saint-Domingue in 1791, which marked the first turning point and the most powerful awakening of humanity&#8217;s conscience to abolish the inhumane practice of systematic enslavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We in the Syrian Future Movement see this international day as an opportunity to examine the reality of &#8220;freedom&#8221; and &#8220;dignity&#8221; in our current era, and to apply these universal values \u200b\u200bto the course of Syria&#8217;s transitional phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slavery did not end with the demise of traditional trade; rather, it transformed into contemporary forms of exploitation and degradation under which Syrians suffer today as a result of the war and chaos we are experiencing due to the policies of the former regime. This makes the struggle for national and social liberation and the building of a state based on citizenship an urgent sovereign duty to ensure the success of the transitional phase in establishing the institutions of the new state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The movement bases its intellectual vision in this statement on absolute ethical principles:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The value of inherent existential dignity: Freedom is the fundamental essence of humanity, and any negligence in protecting it undermines the shared moral fabric of humanity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redressative justice and equity: Acknowledging historical and current crimes against humanity is an essential step towards building stable and reconciled societies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Combating &#8220;modern slavery&#8221; in all its forms: An intellectual and political commitment to fighting all practices that deprive individuals of their will or exploit their material and physical vulnerability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Syrian Future Movement recalls the tragic and terrifying reality that Syrians are experiencing due to the absence of the state and the rule of law, as indicated in international human rights reports concerning indicators of &#8220;modern slavery&#8221; and human trafficking for 2026:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The worsening phenomenon of human trafficking: Syrians (especially women and children in displacement camps and neighboring refugee countries) are classified as one of the most vulnerable groups globally, susceptible to human trafficking networks. Human rights estimates for 2026 indicate that thousands of Syrians fell victim to smuggling networks, physical exploitation, and forced labor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The phenomenon of forced child labor: More than 45% of Syrian children in fragile and displaced areas are forced into arduous and low-wage labor under extremely dangerous environmental and health conditions, representing a blatant form of modern slavery and a systematic denial of their right to education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forced recruitment of minors: Reports have documented the continued recruitment and exploitation of underage children and adolescents by militias and parties to the conflict opposed to the Syrian transitional authority, forcing them into military operations and exploiting the dire living conditions of their families.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploitation of detention and enforced disappearance: The forced detention of tens of thousands of Syrians in prisons and detention centers run by parties to the conflict, and their use as political or economic bargaining chips, represents a blatant extension of a culture of deprivation of liberty and degradation of human dignity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Syrian Future Movement presents its strategic parameters for ending all forms of human degradation in the new Syria through:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dignity First in the New Social Contract: We believe that any future constitution for Syria must enshrine the dignity and individual freedom of the citizen as a red line that the state or any political or military entity cannot violate under any pretext.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Combating Poverty as a Barrier to Exploitation: Restoring national sovereignty and achieving economic recovery through balanced development are the true weapons to protect Syrian families from falling prey to networks of exploitation and modern slavery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accountability and Swift Justice: A secure future for Syria cannot be built without pursuing and dismantling organized crime and human trafficking networks, and holding accountable all those involved in exploiting the tragedy of the Syrian people and profiting from their suffering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Syrian Future Movement puts forward the following recommendations:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Harmonizing Syrian Laws with International Protocols: We recommend that the legislative bodies in the transitional phase fully adopt and adhere to international conventions related to combating organized crime and human trafficking, and strengthen domestic criminal penalties for human exploiters and traffickers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A comprehensive national program to protect children and end forced labor: Launching a national participatory initiative with international organizations (such as UNICEF and the ILO) to enforce free and compulsory education and provide direct financial support to families living below the poverty line to prevent their children from being forced into the labor market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishing the &#8220;National Authority for Combating Trafficking in Persons and Abuse&#8221;: An independent security and human rights center equipped with hotlines to monitor complaints, track organized crime networks, and provide legal, psychological, and physical support to victims and reintegrate them into society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring safe and legal environments in camps: Intensifying human rights and legal monitoring within displacement camps and refugee areas in cooperation with UNHCR to stop extortion and protect women and children from economic or physical exploitation until the last camp, both inside and outside Syria, is closed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Criminalizing the military recruitment of minors without exception: Reforming military laws and monitoring armed factions and entities to ensure that their ranks are completely free of any minors, and considering recruitment under the legal age a war crime that is not subject to any statute of limitations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The importance of the
