The Syrian Future Movement follows with grave condemnation and concern the Colombian government’s decision to recognize what it calls “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. This move contradicts established historical and legal facts and directly clashes with the rules of international law and relevant international resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We in the Syrian Future Movement, while condemning and categorically rejecting this decision, affirm the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n First: The Golan Heights is occupied Syrian territory and will remain Syrian in its identity, affiliation, and legal sovereignty. No state, regardless of its power or position, has the right to grant legitimacy to an occupation of land it does not own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Second: The Colombian recognition does not create any right for Israel, nor does it alter the legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, nor does it grant any international legitimacy to Israel’s annexation measures. Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981 clearly states that Israel’s decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and has no international legal effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Third:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement believes that the seriousness of the Colombian position transcends the boundaries of bilateral relations between Bogot\u00e1 and Tel Aviv. Colombia has become the second UN member state, after the United States, to recognize Israel’s alleged sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Silence regarding this precedent will only encourage the Israeli occupation to attempt to transform individual recognitions into a gradual diplomatic process aimed at undermining the international legal status of the Golan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fourth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n We categorically reject the pretext that links the annexation of Syrian territory to considerations of “Israel’s security.” International law does not permit security concerns, whether real or alleged, to be used as justification for seizing state territory by force. Accepting this logic would strike at one of the most fundamental principles of the international order: the inadmissibility of acquiring territory through war or occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fifth: In this context, we caution against hastily accusing international parties of being behind the decision without documented evidence. At the same time, we emphasize the need to treat it as a political indicator requiring follow-up and action, not a mere passing diplomatic incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sixth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement calls on the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates to take immediate diplomatic action, beginning with summoning the Colombian diplomatic representative, if one exists, or communicating through established diplomatic channels, and delivering an official Syrian protest, demanding that the Colombian government rescind its decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We also call for addressing the United Nations, the Security Council, the General Assembly, Arab and Islamic states, the Non-Aligned Movement, and Latin American countries to reaffirm the legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan and to work to prevent this precedent from being set by other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seventh: Eighth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the fall of the former regime and the establishment of the new Syrian state do not imply the abandonment of Syrian national rights or their renegotiation. The Golan Heights do not belong to any government, regime, or political phase; rather, they are a sovereign right of the Syrian people and the Syrian state. Successive governments bear the responsibility of defending them and cannot relinquish them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ninth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n We affirm that our position on the Israeli occupation and the Syrian Golan Heights does not contradict our pursuit of a just and lasting peace in the region. We urge Syrian diplomacy to give greater attention to Latin American countries and not leave this arena open to Israeli diplomacy.
