Estimates of domestic demand vary, with some sources indicating around 150,000 barrels per day, while others place the figure higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As for the announced domestic production at the beginning of 2026, it is around 100,000 barrels per day or less, with ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the northeastern fields, most notably the Al-Omar field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Official data regarding commercial stocks and strategic reserves in the Banias and Homs storage facilities remains limited. This means that any rapid or ill-considered reduction in Russian imports poses direct risks to refinery operations, the supply of petroleum products, price stability, and the continuation of economic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, energy security is not measured solely by the diversification of import sources, but also by a state’s ability to guarantee the continuity of supplies under all circumstances. This is achieved through building sufficient strategic reserves and developing storage, transportation, and refining facilities, thus preventing any political or military crisis from escalating into a domestic economic crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reducing dependence on Russian oil carries political implications that extend beyond technical aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russia maintains a military and logistical presence within Syria, and the energy sector constitutes one of its most important instruments of economic influence. Consequently, any tangible reduction in imports could be interpreted as a redefinition of the nature of the bilateral relationship and might have repercussions on other issues, such as grain, electricity, military cooperation, and the future of Russian bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Conversely, the United States views reducing dependence on Russian oil as part of diminishing Moscow’s economic influence, without officially declaring it a condition for removing Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, managing this issue requires a high degree of balance, ensuring that Syria’s national interest remains the guiding principle, avoiding any slide into international alignments that could deprive the country of the room for maneuver it needs during the transitional phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, the energy sector should not become a tool for political bargaining between international powers. Instead, supply and investment policies must be based on considerations of economic efficiency and long-term stability, thus preserving the independence of national decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
