The Syrian Future Movement believes that the tragedy of Syrian refugees drowning in the Mediterranean Sea and along the routes to refuge is a direct result of the political and economic deadlock within the country. Based on the updated 2026 reports issued by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which confirm that the Mediterranean Sea continues to claim thousands of lives and result in disappearances annually, addressing the root causes of these “death boats” is a national and moral responsibility that should be at the forefront of our political agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement asserts that the international response to combating irregular migration suffers from a “severe ethical deficiency.” Data from international aid agencies indicates that maritime rescue operations in European waters have faced declining funding and preparedness. This necessitates that international powers abandon purely security-based approaches and adhere to international law of the sea and international agreements to save lives without discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the necessity of building a democratic and stable local environment capable of curbing the collective urge to undertake risky migration, especially given that 2026 demographic statistics show that young people (aged 18-35) constitute 75% of drowning victims on migration routes. This represents a catastrophic drain on Syria’s human capital, which the country desperately needs for recovery and reconstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement links Syria’s commitment to international conventions to the concept of sustainable civilizational partnership. It believes that adherence to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to health, well-being, and reducing inequalities, necessitates integrating water safety and rescue strategies into local management plans for Syrian water bodies (such as rivers and dams), which have also witnessed increasing drowning incidents due to the lack of qualified rescue teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
