As the Lebanese Minister of Economy affirmed, “The economic relationship between the two countries possesses the elements that make it the most important bilateral relationship,” reflecting a genuine understanding of the importance of economic integration, especially given their shared border of approximately 375 kilometers and the deep geographical, economic, and logistical ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement bases its perspective on this, noting that trade between the two countries peaked at $800 million before declining to low levels due to the policies of the former regime and the repercussions of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, we see a comprehensive review of existing agreements as an opportunity to remove logistical obstacles hindering land transport and to unify customs duties, which currently constitute an unfair disparity. Lebanese exporters pay export duties when their goods enter Syria, while Syrian exporters are not subject to the same duties when exporting their goods to Lebanon.
