With hearts resigned to God’s will and decree, and with souls filled with profound sorrow and grief, the Syrian Future Movement received the news of the tragic accident that occurred at dawn on Sunday, July 12, 2026, in the waters of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor Governorate. A ferry carrying approximately 35 civilians, including women and children, collided with a military bridge, causing it to capsize and all its passengers to fall into the flowing river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement, while recalling with deep sorrow and grief that the number of victims has risen to four children, including a girl whose body was found in the village of Al-Tabiyah in the eastern Deir ez-Zor countryside, and estimating the number of missing persons at between 20 and 25, extends its sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims and the missing in this tragic event, and to all the people of Deir ez-Zor Governorate. We pray to God Almighty to have mercy on the victims, grant them eternal peace in Paradise, and inspire their families with patience and solace. We also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and the safe return of the missing to their families, for to God we belong and to Him we shall return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement commends the efforts of the rescue teams that rushed to the scene immediately after the incident to provide aid and assistance. It expresses its appreciation for the efforts exerted by the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, the Ministry of Defense, the Civil Defense teams, divers, and the medical staff at Deir ez-Zor National Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We also highly appreciate the swift response of the Deir ez-Zor Governorate, the Interior Minister’s directive to the Internal Security Forces to mobilize all units to participate in search and rescue operations, and the response of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, which dispatched water rescue teams from the Raqqa, Aleppo, and Idlib governorates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement notes that this tragic incident raises serious questions about the safety of river transport in Syria and the urgent need to provide safe and qualified ferries to transport citizens across the Euphrates River, instead of relying on rudimentary means that endanger lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It should be noted that the ferry suffered a mechanical failure in its engine and ran out of fuel, causing it to drift with the strong current and collide with the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We reiterate that the residents of Deir ez-Zor rely on these ferries as a vital lifeline for crossing the river, and the recurrence of such tragic incidents necessitates urgent intervention to secure safe transportation that meets their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement commemorates the resilience and sacrifices of the people of Deir ez-Zor, a province that has long suffered the ravages of war, neglect, and marginalization, and continues to pay a heavy price daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this context, we reaffirm what we stated in our statement issued on June 5, 2026, entitled “The Project to Rebuild the Al-Siyasiya Bridge in Deir ez-Zor,” where we emphasized that “the right of the people of Deir ez-Zor to a dignified life is a true test of the state’s ability to fulfill its promises and achieve developmental justice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement views this tragic incident as further evidence that the suffering of the people of Deir ez-Zor is far from over, and that the state is now more obligated than ever to assume its responsibilities towards this resilient province and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement demands that the relevant authorities launch an immediate and transparent investigation into the circumstances of this incident, accurately determine its causes, hold those responsible accountable, and take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies in the future. We are following the announcement by the judicial and security authorities in Deir ez-Zor that they have already begun investigation procedures, and we demand that the results be announced publicly and transparently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement reiterates its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the missing in this tragic event. It affirms its absolute solidarity with the people of Deir ez-Zor in their ordeal and commends their patience and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has befallen us could not have missed us, and what has missed us could not have befallen us.
