The Syrian Future Movement follows with great interest and appreciation the historic decision issued by the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on Thursday, July 9, 2026, restoring Syria\u2019s full rights and privileges under the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This decision, reached with unprecedented consensus among member states, comes five years after the former regime was stripped of these rights in 2021, following investigations that concluded its forces had repeatedly used toxic gases during the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, the Syrian Future Movement commends this step, which embodies a qualitative shift in the Syrian state\u2019s approach, compared to the policies of the ousted regime, which were based on deception and evasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We highly value the praise expressed by the OPCW Director-General, Fernando Arias, who affirmed that the decisions \u201creflect the tangible progress achieved through continuous cooperation and constructive engagement between the Technical Secretariat and the Syrian Arab Republic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This achievement is a testament to the efforts of all Syrians, as well as the efforts of the transitional government, which facilitated 32 field visits by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to suspected sites, uncovering hidden stockpiles of chemical weapons. The government also approved plans to destroy some of these stockpiles at the al-Kiswah site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that the decision to strip the ousted regime of its voting rights in 2021 was unprecedented in the organization’s history. It stemmed from the regime’s systematic use of poison gas against civilians. The movement also recalls that the ousted regime joined the OPCW in 2013 under international pressure, claiming the presence of chemical weapons at 26 sites, while the organization confirmed the existence of up to 100 additional sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
