Every year on June 26, the international community stands in solidarity on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, an official observance established by the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 52\/149.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This day was launched in 1998 to commemorate the entry into force of the Convention against Torture in 1987, and to reaffirm that torture is a crime against humanity, absolutely prohibited and unjustifiable under any circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, in 2026, as Syria embarks on its historic transition following the fall of the Assad regime, this day underscores the importance of uncovering the atrocities committed and providing justice for hundreds of thousands of victims and survivors as an indispensable cornerstone for building a state based on the rule of law, justice, and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this day of human rights and conscience, the Syrian Future Movement issues this statement, formulating a comprehensive national vision committed to securing the rights of victims and dismantling the legacy of human atrocities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the systematic and brutal torture practiced by the Assad regime’s security apparatus for decades was an official state policy and a tool of political and social annihilation aimed at breaking the will of the Syrian people and subjugating them. Dismantling this dark legacy is therefore a sacred national and sovereign duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes the importance of documenting the recent human rights statistics for 2026 issued by the Syrian Network for Human Rights and internationally recognized, which confirm that at least 15,300 Syrian citizens have died under torture in regime prisons since 2011, while the fate of hundreds of thousands of forcibly disappeared persons remains unknown. These horrifying figures place Syria at the forefront of the global human rights tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian Future Movement affirms that the survivors of the former regime’s torture chambers, many of whom suffer today from permanent physical disabilities and severe psychological trauma (exceeding 75% among former detainees according to the 2026 Medical Response Reports), are living witnesses to the immense sacrifices of the Syrian people. They deserve exceptional and comprehensive national care that will reintegrate them into public life and preserve their dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian Future Movement believes that the fundamental pillar of success for the current transitional phase and sustainable societal recovery hinges on ending impunity. Civil peace will not be restored, nor will the building of a “future Syria” be completed, through political deals that disregard the blood and suffering of the victims. Rather, it will be achieved through the prosecution and accountability of all those involved in torture crimes before national and international courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Syrian Future Movement believes this occasion presents an opportunity to address the global conscience and international bodies, emphasizing that supporting victims of torture in Syria should not be limited to mere statements, but requires genuine legal and material support for the efforts of the transitional government and local judicial institutions to exhume mass graves, document forensic evidence, and open secret prisons to public scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
