First<\/strong>, a summary of the occasion and its economic and humanitarian importance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement affirms that maritime shipping represents the backbone of globalization and economic activity, as it is primarily responsible for transporting approximately 90% of the total volume of global trade, including food, medicine, and energy resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement points out that this global trade artery depends entirely on the sacrifices and efforts of more than 1.5 million seafarers working on board merchant ships around the world, facing extremely harsh climatic and security conditions to ensure the continued supply of life to humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement believes that the United Nations’ designation of this day in 2010 aims fundamentally to protect the human and legal rights of seafarers, combat violations, discrimination, and piracy, and ensure a safe working environment that preserves the dignity of those working on the high seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Secondly<\/strong>, the national perspective and the Syrian reality in the transitional phase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement draws attention to the fact that Syria, as it navigates its current transitional phase to rebuild its economic and political institutions, possesses a strategic coastline on the Mediterranean Sea (via the ports of Latakia, Tartus, and Banias) and a long-established maritime community that has long suffered from marginalization, corruption, and oppression over the past decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Syrian Future Movement bases its position on documented labor and human rights indicators and reports for 2025\/2026, which demonstrate that Syrian seafarers and workers in the maritime transport sector were among the groups most affected by the absence of international safety standards and the loss of their insurance and legal rights.
