He was born in Damascus in 1883, in the al-Amara neighborhood behind the Umayyad Mosque, to a distinguished Algerian family that had settled in the city in the mid-19th century. His grandfather, the mujahid Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza’iri, had been exiled to Damascus in 1855 following his famous resistance against the French occupation of Algeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He received his early education at the al-Rihaniyya School and then at the Sultaniyya School (Maktab Anbar), before continuing his studies in Istanbul, where he earned a law degree. This qualification enabled him to engage in public and political affairs at an early age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prince Muhammad Said did not participate in the Great Arab Revolt when it broke out in 1916 and remained loyal to the Ottoman state until late 1918, when the signs of the Ottoman military withdrawal from Damascus began to appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the Arab forces approached the city, Jamal Pasha al-Mursini asked him to provide protection for the retreating soldiers, leveraging his influence over a group of Algerian fighters who had accompanied his family to Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Emir deployed his forces throughout various Damascus neighborhoods, such as al-Shaghour, al-Midan, Bab Touma, al-Qassaa, and al-Salihiya, to maintain security and prevent chaos during the power vacuum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a pivotal historical moment, Emir Muhammad Said went to the seat of government in the Saray (government building), only to find it devoid of any Ottoman presence. He took his seat as governor, declaring himself the ruler of Damascus and announcing the establishment of Arab rule in the name of Hussein bin Ali, despite not having received any official mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He lowered the Ottoman flag and raised the banner of the Arab Revolt, a symbolic act that embodied the transfer of power, amidst historical disagreement over the precise date of this event, which falls between September 26 and 30, 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following day, prayers were held at the Umayyad Mosque in the name of Sharif Hussein, with Prince Said leading the prayers, signifying his assumption of a temporary sovereign role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prince began forming a small governmental administration, which included prominent figures such as Fares al-Khoury and Ata al-Ayyubi, in an attempt to establish the first nucleus of a Syrian national government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also oversaw the organization of state institutions, such as the postal service, telegraph, and security, and issued an official statement announcing the establishment of the “Arab Government” in Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, this experiment did not last long, as it ended with the entry of British forces into Damascus on October 3, 1918, accompanied by Faisal bin Hussein. Thomas Edward Lawrence deposed Prince Said and arrested his brother, considering what had occurred a violation of international arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the French Mandate period in Syria, Prince Muhammad Said continued to play political and social roles. He founded the “Syrian Caliphate Society” after the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His role also became prominent during the Great Syrian Revolt, where he worked to negotiate with the French authorities to stop the bombardment of Damascus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He later led popular campaigns, most notably the boycott of the electricity company, which transformed into a successful civil disobedience movement that forced the company to lower prices in 1931.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Prince participated in founding the National Bloc, which led the political struggle against the Mandate. His name was also associated with a number of intellectual and social initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
