The Syrian Future Movement is closely following the news announced by the media on October 24, 2025, regarding the signing of an agreement by the authorities in Damascus with the Medusa Submarine Cable System project to land the first international submarine communications cable in the city of Tartous on the Syrian coast. This represents the first step of its kind in directly connecting Syria to the global digital infrastructure across the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement affirms that any project aimed at modernizing the communications infrastructure and opening up to the digital world represents, in principle, a necessary step in rebuilding the Syrian economy and restoring Syria’s position within the global economic network, provided it is managed according to standards of transparency, national sovereignty, and the foundations of fair economic partnership that safeguard the interests of the Syrian people, not the interests of specific political factions or parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement recalls that Medusa is an internationally recognized European project, partially funded by the European Union, and operates in partnership with global companies such as Orange France, making it a respected technical and organizational entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Syrian Future Movement believes that concluding strategic contracts of this magnitude in the absence of elected oversight and legislative institutions poses a legal and political risk that must be addressed, as such projects carry dimensions that go beyond technology to data control and national digital sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the Syrian Future Movement welcomes in principle any initiative that contributes to developing the telecommunications sector and connecting Syria to the advanced world, it emphasizes that political legitimacy and good governance are the only framework that grants these agreements their legitimacy and sustainability.
We therefore call for all contracts to be subject to review after the transitional period until an elected national government is formed that represents the popular will and ensures that digital wealth and cyber infrastructure are under independent national oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Syrian Future Movement emphasizes that investing in technology should be a bridge toward freedom, development, and transparency, not a means of reproducing central control or technological dependency.
We believe that the submarine cable, if managed with a sovereign economic mindset, could form the core of a new digital economy in Syria based on innovation, knowledge, and equal opportunities. However, if it is incorporated into a system of monopolizing decision-making and wealth, it will be merely an extension of a distorted, unproductive economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
